A little over 63 years ago
Agnus Hefley Rowe, w ife of
Henry S. Rowe, the founder
of the town of Rowe ( which
is now known as Rhododen
dron). died at the age of 57
Rowe, whose husband
platted the area east of
Zigzag Creek (as the riv e r
was called back then), had
been a widow for a little
less than five years.
During that tim e she took
over her husband's real
estate interests, and sold
off large tracts of land,
which helped encourage
the settlem ent to grow into
a popular colony of sum
m er homes
Rowe, who resided in
Portland, recorded her last
w ill and te s ta m e n t on
M arch 12.1917, in Portland,
when she “was upwards of
55 years of age.”

Stapleton, two prominent
mem bers of the Oregon
Bar Association and close
friends of her late husband
who, at one tim e, served as
m ayor of Portland.
“ Being of sound and

under the undue influence
or coercion of any person
w hom soever." Rowe re ­
quested that her 28-year-
old son, Donald Hefley
Rowe of Portland, be ad
m inistrator of her estate.
“ I direct that my body be
decently b u rie d ," wrote
R o w e, “ w ith o u t undue
cerem ony but with proper
regard to m y station in life
and the condition of m y
estate at the tim e of m y
death."
She also instructed her
estate's execu tor, when
there are "funds in his
hands belonging to my
estate sufficient for the
purpose, he pay a ll in­
debtedness and the costs
and expenses of m y last
sickness and b u ria l."

quested that the rem aining
real and personal property
of her estate be divided
equally among her two
sons, Donald of Portland,
and 3 5 -y e a r-o ld H a r r y

behind an estate of 830.000
worth of real property, and
p e r s o n a l p r o p e r t y of
