Gresham man seeks court seat

Cook last week announced that he
intends to seek election to the
Oregon Supreme Court
He is filing for the position now
held by Judge J K Campbell.
Position 4. Campbell was ap
pointed by Gov Vic Atiyeh Dec 1.

Judge Howell which ends Jan 3,
1983
Cook served 24 years in the
Oregon Legislature and has prac
ticed law since 1962 His past
public service also includes terms
as Gresham city judge and Trout
dale city attorney
Cook was chairman of the
Senate Judiciary Committee dur
ing the 1979 legislative session He
was a member of the Judiciary or
Criminal Law Committees during
each session he served except the
1957 session That committee

lion of the court system and the
administration of justice
Cook was involved in the 1979
legislation which adopted the
Oregon Rules of Civil Procedure,

as a lawyer includes the 1961
Re^pportionment suit and Pense
vs. Corbett, a case involving runn

He was the plaintiff and suc
cessful appellant in the landmark
elections case, Cook vs Corbett
That case established the ground
rules for election contests based
on campaign misrepresentations
The Gresham lawyer said in an
nouncing his candidacy, "O ur
founding fathers wisely provided
for the election of justices of the
Supreme Court Since the resigna
tion of Judge Howell in December
of 1980, Position 4 has been held by
an appointee of the governor
“ I believe the people of Oregon
are entitled to a choice of can
didates During my 30 years as a
member of the Oregon Bar, my 24
years as a mem ber of the
legislature and my nine years of
service as a city judge or at
torney, I have had the opportunity
to develop an extensive legal
background
“This will lie an important asset
fo r se rv ic e on the Oregon
Supreme Court,” Cook said " I
believe I can do a good job for the
people of Oregon in this high posi
tion.”
