During the Great Depres
sion of the 1930* when rugg
ed individualism was such
an admirable behavioral
characteristic, a boxing
team was organized at San
dy High School
Boxing cards, sometimes
called “smokers,” were a
very popular means of rais
ing m oney fo r lo c a l
organizations, both in and
out of the schools.
Participants sometimes
received prizes of money or
merchandise, and when
high school athletes par
ticipated. a problem of
eligibility sometimes en
sued The Scenic Cannery
in Pleasant Home was the
scene of a number of
smokers where a boxer
might pick up a few bucks
in those hard times.
The Sandy High School
boxing team began with lit
tle encouragement from
the administration who had
mixed emotions about the
sport The coaches were
non-school people who
were well thought of in the
community. Fortunately,
they were competent box
ing coaches
In the beginning, the kids
on the team paid for all ex
penses
A c c o rd in g to
Edison Mills, a member of
the team, the school ac
cepted no responsibility
However, when the other
teams in the Multnomah
Clackamas Interscholastic
League iM C IL ) sponsored
boxing, the team was r •
cepted as an integral part
of Sandy High School
athletics and received full
support
The coaching was still
provided by outsiders, such
as Dale Stewart, Cecil
Daimler and Em il Reich
At that time Sandy was a
member of the M CIL which
included Estacada, St
Stephens (now Central
C a th o lic ),
G re s h a m ,
Milwaukie, Oregon City,
Parkroae, Columbia Prep
and Hill M ilitary

The Sandy High boxing
team was very successful
as the awards in the
school's trophy case in
dicate Sandy dominated
the M CIL as the team won
second place in 1935 and
1936 and first place from
1937 through 1940 Sandy
also took second place in
the state meets in 1939 and
1940
Boxing ended at Sandy
High School in 1941 when
the M C IL discontinued
sponsorship because of too
m any in ju r ie s , some
serious.
Jerry Swails, who boxed
on the Sandy team, said,
"Some of the opposing
coaches in the M CIL were
so intent on winning that
they would allow or even
force participants to com
pete, and w hen one kid was
hospitalized after a serious
head injury, the end of box
ing was in sight "
High school boxing was
never extensive throughout
the state Most educators
disapproved of the sport
and, although it had the ap
proval of the Oregon School
A c tiv itie s A s so ciatio n
(OSAA) for some time, the
asso ciatio n e v e n tu a lly
dropped it.
According to Ed Ryan,
executive director of the
OSAA, the association is
unadulterably opposed to
boxing on the premise that
it is the only sport that is
designed to do physical
harm to an opponent.
The OSAA, as well as
other state associations,
will not approve of boxing
in any high school All
known educational agen
cies oppose it and colleges
have also dropped it.
Some of the boys who
boxed at Sandy High School
were Jerry Swails. I^ee

The problem existed
because a national testing
agency had not given its
OK for the installation
Recently, however, Under
writers Laboratory gave
its approval
“ This completely turns it
around for us,” said Fire
Marshal Jim Gallagher
“ It proves that some of our

The worry was that the
back of the firebox would

bustibles into the vent
Those fears were disprov
ed
Anyone who would like to
install an insert in a
masonary fireplace is ask
ed to call the fire district.
