Pinewood D erby ‘the highlight of th e year’

Scouts, ages eight to 10, at
the Pinewood Derby
In its sixth year at Boring
School, the Derby has
become “ the highlight of
the year,*' according to An
dy Anderson scout master

dinated the Derby since it
first began in Boring
An electronically con
trolled track, which slopes
and is 55 feet long, supports
five race cars at a time
Each racer is monitered bv
electric sensors that pin
point the winner to the split
second
For two months the boys
have planned for the big
Derby They received the
car kits as Christmas gifts
from Boy Scout Pack 707
There are a few rules to
follow
racer
when
building
a
Individual cars were not
to be made more than two
and three-quarters inches
w ide, seven inches in
length and five ounces in
weight.
Details such as stearing
wheels, painting and decals
are permissible but were
not to exceed ce rta in
specifications The car had
to be “free wheeling," with
no starting devices.
Parents are allowed to
help assist their sons in
their creation by cutting
and carving, but the ma
jority of the time spent on
the car had to be completed
by the scouts themselves
Jean Mosser, secretary
treasurer, said that the
boys really become excited
about the event
All cars are screened

specifications
