Fund-raiser a success for band
by GWEN BOGH
Post Correspondent
The Barlow Band fund
raiser topped last year’s
collections and earned
more than 1500 in scholar
ships, according to Clarice
Moss, coordinator of the
fund-raiser, who said the
band made it the success it
was.
Eighty to 100 students
distributed 6,000 flyers for
the arts and crafts fair,
held at St Henry's Parish
in Gresham Moss adver
tized it in the Portland
newspapers and on A M
Northwest. Two hundred
people were called the
night before the event as a
reminder Last, but not
least, on the day of the sale
the band marched into
Gresham playing music
while flyers were given to
people at stop lights.
More than 240 persons
had visited the arts and
crafts sale before noon
Saturday, leaving four
hours to go
Chuck B o lte n , band
leader, expected that by
the end of the sale 500 peo
ple would have visited.
The “Bandaids.’ ’ a group
of parents organized to
raise money for the Barlow

School
band,
e n g in e e re d the sale.
Preparations were begun
in September, notifying
arts and crafts dealers,
renting tables, and organiz
ing a snack bar
Speaking of the parents,
Moss said, " I don’t have to
ask for things, they always
offer to help.’”
Bolten said, “ There’s a
tremendous amount of sup
port by a small number of
parents here.”
Articles for sale included
jewelry, Christmas decora
tions, stuffed dolls, wood
crafts, stichery and baked
goods Various antiques,
such as horns from the late
1800s and a 1928 Lionel
Train chugging around a
track, were on display.
This is the sixth year for
the Barlow Band fund
raiser “ They’ve all been
successful—some years
more than others,” Bolten
said. “One year they col
lected $800.’’
All proceeds from the
sale are used for music
scholarships, or college
and summer bands. A por
tion may go to the m ar
ching band to "offset some
of the cost not picked up by
the high school,“ said
