monastery to Southern California,
the top floor was opened to residen
tial care making St Jude's unique
The residential care is an in-

to nursing care "There are no
traumas because they are adjusted
to the environment and s ta ff," she
said
Since 1977, the halls of St Jude's
have also been fill«*d with Sandy
area school children taking par, in
a pilot project the Silver Threads
program

nursing home to befriend the
residents and bring joy into each
others' lives
"Sometimes we had more than
loo children in the fa cility in a
day," Mrs Swarthout
Under a Classroom Adopting
Residential Elders (CARE) pro
gram. 35 of the 83 residents have
become unofficial grandparents
and special friends to classrooms
at Kelso. Firwood, Sandv and Bull
Run schools
"We re having more children in
volved and that's wonderful for the
residents," she said
