Runner from Boring aims for trip to nationals
Connie Case is a lot like
most of the other seniors
milling about the campus of
Oregon State U n iv e r
sity with mixed feelings
about her final year, unsure
of what classes she needs
and casting an uncertain eye
toward the future
But then she puts on her
running sweats the uncer
tainty disappears
Case, you see, is the top
returning runner on the OSC
women's cross country
team, and running has
become a way of life It’s
always been that way for the
5 5 senior, who had brilliant
carvers at Sum Barlow High
School and Mt Hood Com
munity College in Gresham
before coming to Oregon
State
This summer, however
was probably the busiest one

Success has followed Case
ever since she left the tiny
town of Boring At Mt Hood,
she won the 1,500 and 3.000
meter titles during track
season, and placed fourth in
the tough cross country
regional cham pionships,
qualifying lor nationals
"Connie Case is a very

overnight it takes months,
even years, of steady train
ing to build the background
necessary for collegiate
distance competition

strong runner She's also
verv pleasant and very
coachable It you want her to
run hard, she'll go out and
bust a gut If you want her to
run easy, she'll back off and
go easy."
Johnson feels that Case's
best distance is from 1,5<M) to
3,000 meters, shorter than
most cross country courses
"She's got a Io, of leg speed
and goixl quickness, which is
why she's suited for those
Case also feels tha, the

running for Oregon State at

out there, you have to handle
it differently

lege experience, it was
natural for Case to stay in
Oregon she's lived here all
her life
