SANDY (O r » ) POST Thurt
July 30 1961 (Sec

Ramps slow accidents
A ccid e n ts caused by
trucks w ith m echanical
failures, such as brake loss,
have been a major concern
to transportation officials in
recent years
Oregon, with its many
mountain rages and steep
hills, was a fertile area for
runaway trucks resulting
from brake failures
"A partial solution," ac
cording to II Scott Coulter,
state highway engineer,
"was the construction of
escape ramps adjacent to
some of the mam highways
Local gardeners earn awards at lily show
with steep hills." One of
these was built on Highway
26 near Government Camp
Last year almost 100
trucks used the six ramps
which have been constructed
in the state This is down
considerably from the near
ly 175 trucks which used the
ramps in 1979
A Sandy woman was
honored for her floral a r
rangement and a local
nursery garnered three
awards in the 34th annual In
ternational Lily Show held
recently in Woodburn
Leona Barnes, 42451 S E.
Wildcat Mountain Drive,
won the award for the best
"A rtistic Design" for her a r
ra n g e m e n t. " B e a u tifu l
Oregon."
Coulter said he believed
one of the contributing
causes of this decrease was
increased safety inspections
begun by the state of Oregon
and its neighboring states
The arrangem ent con
sisted of a beautiful display
of yellow lilies, balanced
with driftwood, cedars and
native grasses The display
was built on a base of beach
sand, interspersed with cor
al and pines
