Northwest lumber mills
The western lumber in
dustry operated at 78 4 per
cent of its practical capacity
during April. That perfor
mance was down slightly
from March, when the in
dustry operated at 80 per
cent.
A key to a mill's survival,
according to R E. Wor
thington, Forest Service
regional forester, is improv
ed efficiency “ With the cost
of logs accounting for about
80 percent of the total cost of
manufacturing lumber, the
most efficient use of the logs
is essential,” he said
One way a mill can im
prove efficiency is through
the Sawmill Improvement
Program (SIP) offered by
the Forest Service and state
S IP is one of several
technical assistance pro
grams offered the wood pro
ducts industry through the
State and Private Forestry
branch of the Forest Service
The program uses com
puters and lasers to measure
and analyze sawmill effi
ciency
This space-age technology
helps determine if a mill's
saw has made the best possi
ble cut of a log into lumber.
As with other Forest Service
assistance programs. SIP is
available to mill owners on
request, and the study report
to the owner is strictly con
fidential

industry are interested in ex
tending the resource, mak
mg the fullest use of the
harvested logs by improving
