Baseball fans need a fix

w ouldn’t have stopped the gam e and made
fxith the players and owners look at th e ir
situation, the problem would have continued
u ntil the game priced itse lf out of existence.
Hemember. the fans are going to have to foot
the full for tfiose salaries one way or another.
It s till may happen. When the s trik e is set
tled, tilings may keep on going u n til, one by
one. teams go bankrupt It m ay not be that
fa r in the future.
As it is, baseball (before the strike ,
anyw ay) has enjoyed a resurgence. A tte n
dance has been at a ll-tim e highs, yet many
teams haven’t been m aking a ll that much
money. Franchises in the m a jo r m arkets
Los Angeles, Chicago and New Y ork — have
no fin an cia l problems, but teams such as
Seattle, Minnesota and others are getting
hurt by inflation.
The cable television m arket m ay help for a
brief tim e, but even that may be a lim ite d
benefit.
It s hard to go along w ith the owners, who
are usually spending a ll tfie ir tim e pinching
pennies and shafting the fans at the expense
of tfie game But it is equally hard to go on
the side of the players, who wish only to sign
s h o rt te rm c o n tra c ts , then p r o s titu te
themselves to the highest bidder.
Money isn , supposed to be the p rim a ry
issue, but in the long run it is.

live out of suitcases.
I he free agent issue is a tric k y one and
both sides seem adam ant. Meanwhile, the
strike is dragging on and an end to the p ro
blem m ay be a long tim e coming.
As usual, it is the fans w ho are doing a ll the
suffering.
Ih v m a jo r league baseball s trik e has bit
the two week m a rk now and sports junkies
are going through w ith d ra w a l sym ptom s.
Baseball m ay not be the most e xciting
s p ir t in the w orld, but it is one you can follow
through newspapers. Heading the boxscores
every m orn in g is a good way to find out just
what went on the previous day, who is
l<kading what categories and hxiking ahead to
the d a y ’s m atchups
I t ’s also a dam n good way to k ill a half-
hour or so instead of w orking
Without baseball stats, the m orning paper
just doesn’t hold much excitem ent anym ore.
There have been a lot more feature stories on
auto racing la tely and those get m ig h ty old in
a hurry.
What is the s trik e a ll about? The players
and owners are once again at each o th e r’s
throats and it looks p re tty serious this tim e
I he players say the issue isn’t money, but it
re a lly is in an indirect manner.
The big issue is the free agent situation
I he owners want a team to receive compen
sation if one of its players signs w ith another
team via the free agent route. The players
disagree, feeling that it would ham per th e ir
m a rk e ta b ility .
In a nutshell, the players like the way the
free agent m arket has skyrocketed the past
two years and want it to rem ain that way.
That ’s why you see players like Hick Cerone,
a .265 h itte r, receiving a sa la ry of some
$400,000 a year.
Salaries that high are getting to lx* the rule,
ra th e r than the exception. E ver since N Y
\ ankee owner George Steinbrenner inked
Dave W infield to a $25 m illio n m u lti-ye a r
contract, m a jo r league salaries have gone
