Strawberry Festival
Summer days can create safety hazards
Straw berry Run of three and
10 kilometers An American
Legion baseball tournament
w ill continue through the
weekend on the college's
b a s e b a ll fie ld and the
Gresham Eire Department
w ill host an in v ita tio n a l
water ball tournament.
The festival is a "ce le b ra
tion of com m unity," accor
ding to coordinator Bob
Dematteis "The idea is to
invite all aspects of the com
m unity. including the col
lege. to celebrate the fact
that we are a com m unity."
The summer months w ill bring sunshine
and outdoor activities, but w ith those
leisure days come potential hazards to
humans
With the return of warm weather comes
the swarming of bees and wasps Eor most
people, the venom of the stinging insects is
annoying, but not a serious health pro
blem Eor some, however, the bee sting
can be fatal.
There are individuals w ho are allergic to
stings Insect stings cause more deaths
each year than snake bites, according to
the American Medical Association The
most common stinging insects are bees,
hornets, wasps, yellow jackets, bumble
bees and fire ants
The sting causes pain, swelling, redness,
itching and burning If stung by a honey
bee, carefully remove the stinger by gent
ly scraping with a knife blade of fingernail
Wash with soap and water Place ice wrap
ped in cloth or cold compresses on the
sting area Soothing lotions, such as
calamine, or a paste of baking soda and a
little water are often helpful in relieving
discomfort
Those allergic to insect stings suffer
from a condition known as anaphylactic
shock It can occur sometimes from only

and energy conservation
demonstrations.
The day is designed like an
old fashioned country fair.
There w ill be booths fe a tu r
ing food items, games, hand
crafts and services Many of
the food booths w ill contain
various straw berry dishes
Open entry contests w ill
follow the country fa ir pat
tern of the festival Entries

straw berry desserts, jams
and jellies, homemade ice
c re a m , and q u ilts and
quilted items
Continuous entertainment
w ill be provided by campus
and comm unity volunteers,
in clu d in g vocal and in
strumental groups, dancers
and a clown

one sting if the victim has been stung
previously.
Insect sting shock symptons include
severe swelling in other parts of the body,
such as around the eyes, lips and tongue.
Weakness, coughing or wheezing, severe
itching, stomach cramps, nausea and
vomiting, anxiety , d ifficu lty in breathing,
dizziness, collapse, unconsciousness and
hives or rash over the body often follow
quickly after the sting
It is im portant to open an airway and
restore breathing Some experts suggest
using a tourniquet in severe reactions
where a life m ight be at stake Emergency
insect sting kits available only by prescrip
tion sometimes contain tourniquets It can
be used only if the sting is on an arm or leg
Don t tie it too tight and loosen every five
minutes until medical help arrives A wat-
chband or belt can serve as a tourniquet.
Place cold compresses on the sting area
Keep the victim lying down unless he is
short on breath Then let him sit up Keep
the victim quiet and comfortable if a first
aid kit for insect stings is available, use ac
cording to directions
The return of warm weather has also
meant the return of swimmers to oceans
and rivers And, inevitably, some of those
swimmers w ill drown.
In try ing to help someone who is in trou
ble in the water, remember to be careful of
your own safety The drowning person can
pull the rescuer down w ith him Keep calm
and do not overestimate your strength.
If the victim is near a pier or edge of the
pool, hold out your hand or foot You can
also toss a life preserver, or extend a pole,
board, rope, towel, chair or anything han
dy If the victim is unconscious and you
suspect a neck or back in ju ry from diving,
place a board under head and back while
he is still in the water to prevent further
damage L ift him out on the board Use a
boat if the victim is some distance from
shore
Start a rtific ia l breathing at once, before
the victim is entirely out of the water Use
the mouth-to-mouth technique Continue
resuscitation on the bank; first clear the
mouth and airw ay of foreign matter. T ilt
the victim 's head back, pinch his nostrils
shut, cover the victim 's mouth with your
own and give four quick breaths Then give
approxim ately 12 breaths per minute, until
you can see the victim 's chest rise.
If the victim 's stomach is bloated with
swallowed water, put him on his stomach,
place both hands on the stomach and lift

Once breathing is restored, keep the v ic
tim com fortably warm with blankets,
coats or towels Do not give food or water
Call an ambulance or take the victim to
the nearest hospital wth an emergency
room if he is still unconscious, have so
meone else drive so you can continue ar
tific ia l breathing, if necessary
If there is no pulse, cardiac compression
should be started To be effective, this re
quires someone trained in the technique I,
must be done at the same time as a rtific ia l
breathing If the rescuer is alone, give 15
chest compressions, then two quick
breaths if two rescuers are present, one of
them gives five chest compressions for
each breath from the other
People w ho have been submerged m cold
water i below 70degrees > often can survive
without brain damage Some victims have
been under for as long as 38 minutes and
still lived Mouth to mouth breathing and
heart compression must be started as soon
as possible and continued for several
hours, even if the victim appears dead
The above medical advice comes from
Frank (h ap pell of the American Medical
Association.
