about people
Child’s party an experience
I plead g u ilty I am one of those m others who gives her
kid the h ru sho ff when she asks fiv e m onths in advance,
H o w m any m ore days u n til m y b irth d a y ? "
A four yea r old puts a lot m ore stock in this type of
social fun ction than I do. m aybe th a t's w hy she sta rts
w o rking on me so e a rly. Two weeks ago I ran out of e x
cuses
her b irth d a y p a rty was ju st around the corner
and it was tim e to face the m usic.
Her o rig in a l list of frien ds she wanted to in v ite includ
ed her e n tire preschool class of 25, six neighbor kids and
two from church I d id n 't feel as if I w anted to sta rt
önJ pieces
ca te rin g p a rtie s this e a rly , so we w h ittle d the ch ild re n
down to six and that alm ost took a week
Not being to ta lly insane at the onset. I m ade the in v ita
lions to brothers and sisters, fig u rin g most of the
m others would also show up to help out
I hanks to the w o rldlin ess of her sister, m y youngest
g irl was in fo rm e d that she had to have a them e fo r her
p a rty , happy b irth d a y plates ju st w e re n ’t enough
E v e ry th in g fro m nut cups to w ra p p in g paper had to
m atch She caught on real q u ick; soon I had a list of
s tra w b e rry shortcake item s that alm ost reached the
local s ta tio n e ry store Her p a rty was not only g e tting
m ore com p lica ted, it was becom ing m ore expensive
I he nigh, before the p a rty . I rem e m be re d about the
cake A slight oversight, but nothing that cou ld n't be
w hipped up w h ile the fa m ily slept It d id n 't look lik e it
,«•11 u n til the next m orning, -when the la y e r cake took on
the appearance of a bundt cake.
I, looked p re tty good a fte r the fro stin g and candles
(. a m o u tla g i‘d the surface. I hank goodness kids a re n 't
too c r itic a l of cake and ice cream
Balloons go w ith p a rtie s lik e a s p irin go w ith
headaches T here is no lie, te r w ay to s ta rt a day of a b ir
thday p a rty than by blow ing up a couple dozen b ill loons
I have decided e ith e r m y lungs a re g e ttin g w eaker or
somebody is m a kin g balloons out of re cycle d inner
tubes
I he firs t guests started to a rriv e an hour before the
scheduled tim e Soon the kitche n was fu ll of coats,
assorted boots and a few u n fa m ilia r faces of sisters and
bro th ers of frien ds I s till had the punch to m ake, the
table to set and a glass of w ine to d rin k M ore ch ild re n
began to tric k le in around the appointed tim e , accom
panied by a few tru s ty m others whose rin gs I im
m e d ia te ly kissed
A halt gallon of m elted ice crea m and a p itc h e r of
lem onade la te r, the p a rty was o ffic ia lly christened and
so was m y rug My g ir l blew out her candles a s p lit se
cond before her bangs ignited, but she took tha t as a
m a n ife sta tio n that her wish cam e true
I he high point of the p a rty was the opening of
presents I he little ones who had been s ittin g so nicely in
a c irc le , squeezed in fo r a b e tte r look The instant snap
shot I took shows m y da u g h te r's extended a rm s tre t
ching upw ard fro m the huddle of Ixxlies tossing out
pit per
I had a te m p o ra ry loss of sa n ity h a lfw a y through the
p a rty brought on by noisem akers and gam es I thought I
was reco verin g when a little boy asked, "W h a t's fo r d in
ner'.’ "
When I asked him w hy he d id n 't go home w ith his
sister, he replied, "B ecause she d id n ’t com e to the p a r
ty ; I cam e w ith the boy next d o o r.”
I e r r ific ,
I told him "G e t y o u r coat, the p a rty 's
over ”

The Kubota B7100DT with
four-wheel drive. I t ’s strong
enough for commercial work.
I .ike park maintenance, nursery
work and landscape contracting.
And nimble enough for working
around the garden.
Standard features include
3-speed rear PTO, independent
rear brakes, differential lock and
a Category I hydraulic 3-point
hitch.
And happily, the B7100DT’s
16 hp diesel engine uses less
fuel. So when you dig in to go to
work, you don’t have to dig as
deep into your pocket.
