Oregon City teams favored
as Timber Valley League
district meet begins Friday
by M \R K FI.O Y I)
Oregon City w ill be playing a game of King of the H ill
when the Tim ber Valley League d istrict track meet un
folds Friday at Pop Rannow Stadium in Sandy
Oregon City is a heavy favorite to defend its boys crown
and its g irls team is picked to unseat Sandy as district
champs
West Linn figures to be in the thick of things in both
team races The Lions actually won the TVL girls dual
meet title, but w ill go into district as underdogs to the
Oregon City depth. Sandy should also challenge Oregon
City and West Linn for the firs, three places in the girls
competition
“ Oregon City has a slight edge over West Linn because
of the big meet com petition,’’ Sandy coach Randy Hut
chinson said "West Linn has some quality people but
Oregon City has a lot of depth We (the Pioneers) should
be th ird , mavbe second
“ We re going to surprise some people," he added “ The
kids are really primed for the meet With a little luck, we
could be right in there for second ’’
Sandy’s girls won the meet last year, but gone are
Michele ( leland and Christie E llio tt, who combined for
five district titles as well as some important relay points
Back to defend one title, though, is ju n io r Gayle Roth
Roth w ill try for her second consecutive boo meter crown
and her third straight d istrict title She won the 400 as a
freshman But it won’t be easy; Canby's Teresa Kat
terheinrich and West Linn's Donna Gentzler have faster
times going into the race
Roth has the second fastest tim e in the 300 hurdles to
OC s Denise Wheatley and could score points in the high
jum p
Sandy’s best bet at a district title could be Stephanie
Hagstrom Hagstrom was second to Cleland in the javelin
last year and her 137-4 is tops in the league by some 20
feet She should also score in the shot and discus
The top m ark in the shot belongs to Sandy sophomore
Paige Daugherty, who also is near the lead in the discus
Daugherty owns the league's second best javelin throw as
well
Sandy is tra d itio n a lly strong in the throwing events and
that is where many Pioneer points are usually won But if
Sandy hopes to make a dent in the West LinnO regon City
stronghold, it may come on the track
The 800, 1.500 and 3,000 are critic a l races," admitted
Hutchinson “ We hope to score some big points there I've
got a lot of confidence in the kids we have running those
events
Gayle. Donna ( Nelson), Laura (Stnngham ) and
Renee (Hess) are all experienced runners who perform
well in big meets ”
Nelson's appearance on the track is amazing in itself
Less than two weeks ago, she was in a serious car acci
dent. suffering severe cuts and bruises But the gutty
sophomore has made a rem arkable recovery and could be
a factor in the 3,000, even against the TV L's prem ier
distance runner. West L in n ’s Kathy Nichols.
'Donna s back and it is like the accident never happen
ed,” marveled Hutchinson “ She ran last week and she
wasn't even lim ping.”
Stnngham qualified for state in the 1,500 last year and
w ill be chasing Oregon C ity ’s T ricia Sliger, who has a best
time of 4 56 Stringham is two seconds behind and Nichols
w ill also run the 1,500
Hutchinson is also looking for points in the jum ping
events and feels that freshman Sharon Jensen is ready for
big things in the long jum p She has a best of 16-2, fifth in
the league to date
Sandy should also pick up points in the relays and needs
to break through in the sprints or hurdles to pull o ff an
upset in the team race
West Linn w ill be paced by sprinter K im Klein, who
should be favored to win the 100, 200 and possibly the 400
The Lions w ill also field favorites in the long jum p and
high jum p and Nichols w ill be favored in the 3,000 West
Linn's relay teams are also among the d is tric t's bests
Oregon City is strong everywhere Wheatley is a solid
bet in the hurdles. Sliger is strong in the distances and
Can Heppler should score in the sprints Kay Yoder w ill
be tough in the throwing events for Oregon City
Oregon City, on paper, should walk away w ith the boys
competition
The defending champs have everyone back and have
added even more depth West Linn has some quality
athletes, but it is unlikely that the Lions or any other team
w ill have enough horses to unseat Oregon City.
Several other teams have good individuals as well, in
cluding Sandy The Pioneers' Scott Skipper heads the list,
topping the rankings in the javelin His 199 5 is some 20
feet ahead of his nearest com petitor Skipper's 498 in the
shot put is second in the TVL behind West Linn's T erry
Schmeiser
