‘A Funny Thing Happened
On the Way to the Forum’

• In my opinion, it's probably the funniest
musical comedy ever w ritte n ,“ Kuntz said.
Producer Pauline Stafford agreed, “ I t ’s
h ilarious."
Adapted from the plays of Plautus, the pro
duction is a slapstick of mistaken identieies
The story is that Pseudolus (Noel A llen), a
slave, w ill be granted his freedom if he can
secure as his m aster's bride a v irg in
(Christine P e ttin g ill) who has completed her
basic course in the art of being a courtesan
The love struck master ( Bob Lawson) finds
competition, of a sort, from his lecherous
father (Jim W ilhite) and the vain soldier
(L a rry I^iM arsh) for whom she was o»iginal-
ly intended
Something new happened on the way to the
new production that opens next Thursday at
the Sandy Community Theatre,
For the firs t tim e the Sandy High School
drama and music departments have o ffic ia lly
teamed up w ith the Sandy Community
Players for a fu ll fledged presentation. “ A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum ”
The two groups have shared facilities
before, but this is the firs t tim e both w ill
receive some financial gain from a produc­
tion
It also marks another firs t — for live
theater in Sandy. “ This is the firs t big
m usical w ith a fu ll orchestra in this
building, ' according to director M ark Kuntz
SUHS music director Steve Christensen w ill
lead a 17 piece orchestra through its paces
from above the set.
“ A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum , ’ opened on Broadway in 1962 and im ­
mediately became renowned for its hilarious
fast paced action
The show introduces a new stage to the San­
dy Community Theatre also Built for better
visib ility for the audience, the stage w ill hold
a set constructed by Hank E m rich And it w ill
be lit with new lighting
Stafford is making her debut as a stage pro
ducer “ The director has all the fu n ,” she
said, “ and the producer gets all the comm it
tees organized and gets people to say. Yes,
and gets the maybes' to say, ‘ Yes,“ ’
Keeping with the SCP tradition of bringing
new talent to the fore, Stafford was involved
in the last production serving champagne in
the lobby “ I think that is when M ark asked
me to work w ith him on this show,” she said,
"and you don’t say, ’No,' to Mark Except for
tryin g out for a couple parts in previous pro­
ductions. my only connection w ith SCP has
been buying lots of tickets ’*
There w ill be a special matinee perfor­
mance next Thursday, May 7, at 1 p m
Curtain tim e w ill be 8 p m . for p erfor­
mances May 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 A special
Mother's Day matinee w ill be given at 2 p m
Tickets are $3.50 for adults and $2 50 for
students and senior citizens
“ We just want everyone to come,” Stafford
said. “ I t ’s hilarious. It really is.”
The SCP w ill again offer a dinner theater
package An Italian buffet supper w ill be
available at the deli Spaghetti, lasagna and
trim m ings w ill be offered along w ith theater

music, w ill be the featured
singer and speaker at the
M other D aughter Banquet
next Friday. May 8, at Sandy
Baptist Church
Hall is a Gresham resident
and was named outstanding
new vocal gospel a rtist in
1979 She has released three
records and tape's The wife
of form er Firwood School
teacher John Hall, she does
concerts all over the nation
“ I do not consider myself a
Christian musician, but I
consider m yself a Christian
who is a m usician,” she said
Hall w ill accompany herself
on guitar and piano.
Theme of the banquet is
“ Happiness is ..." and w ill in ­
clude "Happiness is . pray
mg, eating, singing, playing,
honoring, sharing and allow ­
ing God to be* the Lord of life
and experiences.”
The banquet begins at 6 ,'M)
