Baseball season
is here again
by MARK FLOYD
Sports Editor
While O regon w as ru stin g aw ay in a
m onth-long se rie s of to rre n tia l dow npours,
the rest of the nation w as c e le b ra tin g the
opening of the m a jo r league baseball season
last week
Most of the country has been basking in
w arm te m p e ra tu re s , and beer, the fo rm er
unusual for this e a rly in the season. And the
play of som e tea m s has been unusual a s well.
The Los Angeles D odgers got off to a hot
s ta rt, winning th eir first four g am es, in
cluding th re e a g a in st defending division
c h a m p Houston. L A. has vowed to turn
things around this season and it looks like the
D odgers a re well on th eir way. Too bad, who
likes the D odgers?
The su rp risin g A tlanta B raves a re right
behind in second. S urprising, b ecau se they
have a lre a d y won th re e gam es. It took them
until n early May last y e a r to accom plish that
feat. A tlanta is the local favorite, since 147
B raves g am es will be shown on cab le TV this
season. Now if th eir two 40-year-old pitch ers
can last the season, the B raves could be in
terestin g .
Houston, m eanw hile, has done a com plete
tu rn aro u n d and is m ired in last. In betw een
a re the too-old Reds, the too-young P a d re s
and the too-flaky G iants.
In the e a st, those A m azin' M ets a re again
on top. But don’t m o rtg a g e your house on
them . Philly is right behind, barely a h ead of
M ontreal and St. Louis. But the d read ed
P ira te s of P ittsb u rg h will probably win Who
can like a tea m from P ittsb u rg h ? Go Mon
tre a l and New York!
In the A m erican L eague, ev ery b o d y ’s
fav o rite tea m , or it should be, is O akland.
Billy M artin has the A’s playing Billy-ball,
which is running, stealin g , punching and
throw ing your s ta rtin g p itch er for nine inn
ings re g a rd le ss of the score. It w orks,
though, an d O akland rolled up a 5-0 record
through the first week. The A’s a re the m ost
exciting tea m in baseball.
But when the season g ets old, so will those
p itc h e rs ’ a rm s . If O akland d o esn ’t com e up
with som e reliev e rs, look for K ansas City to
com e through again. G eorge B rett h a s n ’t
rea lly had a ch an ce to explode yet, and with
his m e d ic a l p ro b le m s, th a t could be
dangerous.
A d ark horse tea m is the C hicago W hite
Sox who, rid of Mr. V eeck’s m o n eta ry con
trol, opened th eir w allets to buy a pennant. It
m ay w ork, but not this y e a r. C alifornia is
bound to be b e tte r than last y e a r, T exas and
M innesota the sa m e and S eattle c a n 't be
m entioned in m ixed com pany.
In the e a st, the M ilw aukee B rew ers a re on
top, but like so m any o th er tea m s, they lack
pitching depth. T im e will tell a t the end of
su m m e r, d uring the d oubleheader days.
B altim ore, which could be a fun team if E a rl
W eaver w a sn ’t such a grouchy old m an, will
com e on and probably win. The New York
Y ankees (now w ho’s the m a n a g e r? ) could
also be up th ere if D ave W infield b ats with
his w allet and D etroit could s u rp rise a few
people, probably those who don’t know a lick
about baseball. As for Toronto, Boston and
C leveland, w ait until next decade.
F o u r sen tim en tal picks for the playoffs
would be the A tlanta B raves and M ontreal
Expos in the N ational L eague and the
O akland A’s and D etroit T igers in the
A m erican League.
M ore logical picks, how ever, would be Los
A ngeles and P hiladelphia in NL and K ansas
City and B altim ore in the AL.
Now the best bet in baseball this season is
th at th eir will be a big old dispute betw een
the p lay ers and ow ners com e the end of May.
In which case, all of the above predictions
w on’t m ean a thing.

Paola, Martin slug homers
as Pioneers take 9-5 win
The Sandy batting attack
exploded Monday as the
P io ne ers downed host
Molalla 9-5 in a Timber
Valley League baseball
game
Sandy took advantage of
the fact that Molalla had no
outfield fence as Mitch Paola
and John Martin cranked out
home runs to pace the
Pioneers Mo Contreras
would have had one too. but
the umpire ruled that the
Sandy sophomore failed to
touch third base, a decision
that Pioneer coach Curtis
Heath disputes
Nevertheless, the Pioneers
won easily as Kraig Gifford
went the distance on the
mound He gave up a dozen
hits, but scattered them and
walked just one Molalla bat
ter
Paola led the offensive at
tack, scoring three runs and
smacking a double in addi
tion to his home run. The
four bagger came in the
th ird , when the ju n io r
walloped a shot over the
centerfielder's head
Paola hit a double in the
fifth and scored when Martin
poked a shot into the right
Centerfield power alley for
another homer,
Contreras knocked in a
pair of runs with his shot and
made it home, but apparent
ly missed third base and was
called out. That ended San
dy's sixth inning rally, but it
m a tte re d lit t le as the
Pioneers rolled on to the win.
The Pioneers lost a TVL
contest Tuesday to Silverton
by a 12 1 score Sandy scored
its lone run in the first when
Contreras stole third and
scampered home on a throw
ing error
But the Pioneers couldn't
halt the Silver Fox bats
Silverton pounded 13 hits for
its 12 runs and Sandy helped
the hosts out by committing
five errors.
The real problem on of
fense was Sandy's inability
to get to pitcher Mark Anton
son The southpaw shut down
the Pioneers on two hits and
held them scoreless after the
first inning He also record-
