Oregon homeowners and
renters who install wind
powered, solar, or geother­
mal energy equipment for
use in their residences are
entitled to a federal tax
credit of up to $4, ihm ,
The credit, which directly
reduces income tax lia b ility ,
is based on 40 percent of the
first $10.000 of qualifying ex
penditures F o rm e rly, the
credit was 30 percent of the
first $2.(MM) expended plus 20
percent of the next SH.iMM)
Thus, the m axim um credit
has been raised from $2,200
to $4.(MM)

The basic $10.(MM, of cost
available for the credit may
only be used once for a
residence Taxpayers who
have previously claimed a
credit for the installation of
renewable energy source
equipment in their homes
are only allowed a credit for
the portion of the $h,.(NM) that
is unused If the taxpayer
moves to another home,
however, the credit w ill be
a v a ila b le fo r th e new
residence in the fu ll amount
In addition to the $4.(MM)
credit for solar, wind, and
geothermal equipment, a 15
percent credit is allowed for
w e a th e r iz a tio n
expen­
ditures This sm aller credit
is based on the first $2,(MM)
spent fo r w e a th e riza tio n
m aterials such as insulation,
storm windows.
