The National Basketball Associatipn has a
problem and it’s trying to do something about
it.
The problem is sagging attendance and a
general lack of interest in the NBA. The
solution which league officials came up with
was to delay the start of the season by three
weeks.
You see, the NBA season normally starts in
early October, which is just about time the
World Series gets under way. As you know,
baseball can be a boring game at times, at
least on television. But come World Series
time, there are few’ events that can match it.
Enough people watch the Series to put a
serious dent in the NBA’s opening attendance
mark and the basketball wise men have
decided that the trend has continued into the
regular season — at least, until the playoffs
spark a little interest.
That is one hell of a solution to come up
with.
Sure, attendance may suffer during the
week of the World Series, but that has nothing
to do with the succeeding weeks. Pro
basketball is not telecast nationally until
much later in the year and season ticket
holders, who usually constitute the majority
of spectators, will be faithful in the early
going.
No, the blame cannot be case on baseball.
The blame must go to the nature of the pro
game, itself.
The National Basketball Association has
become boring. Period. Even telecasters
admit that games don’t m atter much until the
final five minutes.
There have been so many rule changes to
boost the offense that the game has become a
farce. It is generally thought that the fans
come to see offense, so rule changes have
relected that.
Games have become so high-scoring that
individual
baskets
become
alm ost
meaningless. Defense is nearly non-existent
and the distribution of players throughout the
league is not even.
But the worst NBA rule, the one which has
made the game so automatic and boring, is
the bonus free throw situation. The best
players in the world are given three
opportunities to make two shots in the penalty
situation of two shots on a non-shooting foul.
That’s ridiculous. How many times do you
see an offensive rebound on a free throw? If
extra opportunities are given, it should be on
the grade school level.
The season is also too long which makes
individual games relatively meaningless
until the end of the season. And too many
teams are allowed in the playoffs. The field is
watered down.
These are the best athletes in the world. No
other athletes of such size are required to
make such graceful moves at such high
speed But so much is requested of these
athletes during the long season that they
must pace themselves and the end product is
not of the highest caliber.
Pro basketball is bowing to baseball and
delaying its season. That is not a bad idea, but
the NBA should take it a step further and take
a lesson from baseball. Its playoff structure
is simple and with few teams. The game, with
the exception of the designated hitter, has few
gimmicks Sure, the season is long, but
baseball is played at a much slower pace and
the strain is not nearly as great on the
athletes.
College basketball is highly successful and
one of the best entertainment bets on
television. Yet it has few rules to benefit the
offense, no gimmicks and a short season.

Robert Paul gains control over an opponent. The Sandy sophomore took the
123-poiatd championship of the South Salem Invitational wrestling tour-
nanient last weekend and helped the Pioneers to a lopsided win, including a
better than Marshall which lost to
the Pioneers by a hum iliating 66 to 1
score. Marshall was penalized a
team point for unsportsmenlike
conduct.
“ L a rry Topliff had to be our
outstanding wrestler at the meet,”
Sandy coach Ron Calhoun said.
“ T here w ere tw o undefeated
wrestlers in his bracket and he
pinned everybody . ”
Sandy so dominated the tourney
that the Pioneers won 10 of the 13
weight classes
T opliff won three matches by pin
at 98 pounds. At 106, Mike Rohweder
scored two pins and a 16-0 superior
decision. B ill Mathews had two pins
The red-hot Sandy High wrestlers
annihilated the field and claimed
firs t place in the South Salem
Invitational Tournament Saturday.
The Pioneers, ranked fourth in the
state, won with 251 points. South
Salem was second, 168; Central, a
Class AA school from Monmouth
was third, 89; and Marshall was
fourth, 68.
But that doestn’t tell the whole
story. Most of the other schools'
points came in matches against each
other. No one scored very well
against the Pioneers.
Sandy beat central 55-6 and South
Salem 56-9. But they both fared
well. The younger McKinnis won the
178-pound bracket, including a tough
11-10 win over M arshall’s Serone
James. Then Tim Sytsma picked up
two pins and a fo rfe it to win at 191.
and a decision at 115.
Robert Paul also took a cham
pionship for the Pioneers with three
decisions at 123. Scott Quick took
second for the Pioneers at 130. He
scored a pin and a decision, but was
blanked 7-0 by Greg Lawrence of
Central. Carey Larson took th ird for
Sandy at 136 w ith a 1-2record.
From 141 to 191 the Pioneers were
invincible. Mike Russell pinned
every opponent at 141. Chris Jones
scored two falls and a superior
decision at 148. Cal McKinnis, 157,
and Dan M artin, 168, flattened every
opponent.

McKinnis, had a pretty good day as
