A small note scotch taped to my sugar bowl read: “ You w ill immediately report to a training camp for intense physical conditioning. Your body has become engaged in the Battle of the Bulge.” I looked down at my sagging torso and had to adm it it was suffering from battle fatigue. I reached for my card index of diets which I have tried with varying degrees of success over the years, rhere are the bizzare diets, the Mayo clinic diets and those calculated for my astrological sign My husband glanced over the assortment and said, “ You need something simple, like no food for the main meal and a side order of water with a toothpick.’ “ That’s my logger’s d ie t,” I said, “ and it ’s no good, I gained 10 pounds on it.” “ I don’t get the connection,” he came back, “ loggers pile the food away.” 1 explained I called it the loggers Diet because I went through 14 boxes of toothpicks and drank three gallons of water after which I fe lt like 1 had a reconstituted fir tree in my stomach. put a different plate on the table at each meal and just dreamed of how good it would taste. Another good one was my Chinese diet. I could put as much food as I wanted on my plate as long as I ate with chop sticks. Never having mastered the a rt of eating with kindling, I lost several pounds. My liquid diet was a big hit. I drank an ounce of Scotch six times a day for a week. By the end of the th ird day I was so smashed I wasn’t even thinking about food — or anything else The smokers diet was in the file, but untried. It had nothing to do w ith cigarettes. I was just supposed to burn all my food before I ate it. I considered an alternative to dieting and asked my husband if maybe just wearing a girdle m ight help. He informed me that nobody made a 24-hour girdle yet, although I m ight be able to stretch an 18 hour into one. Then he poked me and said, “ Your theme song would be, “ Please Release Me, le t Me Go.” I told him he was pushing his luck and that I was strongly considering my Navy diet. I would eat nothing but navy beans fo r three days. I wouldn’t lose much weight, but everyone else would be so miserable they would just drop the subject of dieting. uWaxgoAet Sclmaies ^Btts and pieces I looked through the file, sure to find one that would take off a w rinkle or two. The macaroni diet was always a winner. I remember I ate three cups of uncooked noodles then drank six quarts of w arm salted water When the noodles swelled up in my stomach I didn’t eat another thing for a week. I was partial to the magazine diet also. I cut pictures of food from magazines and pasted them to paper plates. 1 ORANGES Wi - CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR e A L FA LF A SPROUTS (4OZ.) e BEAN SPROUTS (I6o z.t e C H O P SUEY (u o z .) e DRIED N O O D LE S (5OZ.)
