6— SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur».. Feto S. 19«1 (Sec. 2) Oregon prints on exhibit at MHCC gallery Oregon print making a rt ists w ill be honored at a reception on Feb. 17 at Mt. Hood Community College A rt Mall Gallery, from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibition represents the best prints, as selected by judge Gordon Gilkey. Gilkey w ill have selected the finest works in the exhibit for Purchase awards for MHCC. These awards w ill be an nounced at the opening night reception, to which the public is invited. For those unable to attend the Feb. 17 reception, the exhibit w ill run through March 10th. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Microhydro power an energy alternative for Oregonians One of the • new est” energy technologies is also one of the oldest I t ’s scarce in the U.S., but has been common throughout much of the world for centuries. It costs a lot to install, but the fuel is free. Small-scale water power uses w a te r to produce electricity. I t ’s also called b a c k y a rd h y d ro p o w e r, microhydropower or simply microhydro ( m icro, meaning s m a ll; h yd ro , m eaning w ater), according to Greg W heeler, Oregon State University energy specialist. As winter rains bolster streams, there has become an increasing interest among Oregonians in microhydro power Other less seasonal reasons are increasing SUPER C O U P O N WESTERN FAMILY pays for itself. Wheeler’s answer is that there is no such thing as a typical system However, he figures that a system, which could cost 88,000 installed, might pay for itself in 5 years or less If the federal residential energy tax credit of 40 percent is extended to in clude m ic ro h y d ro , the payback period could be less than three years. Microhydro systems in clude three main parts: a water delivery and return system, a turbine or wheel and an electrical generator. For the system to work, w a te r fir s t m ust be “ b o rro w e d ” fro m the stream . T herefore, the beginning of the system is a water inlet or diversion. This prices and decreasing availability of conventional energy sources, legislation requiring electric utilities to purchase excess power gen erated and state tax credits. So fa r, federal tax credit- s.aren't available for non co m m e rc ia l hydropow er projects Oregonians with access to a stream might well consider a microhydro system to supply some of their power Wheeler feels that there are many su ita b le sites in Oregon It's d ifficu lt to estimate how many But it may be even more d iffic u lt to find qualified installers, engineers or consultants and to finance the system People often ask how much a typical microhydro stysem costs and how long before it can be anything from a pipe with inlet submerged, to a dam a few feet wide by 2-feet high, to a major dam with spill was and fish ladder W ater moves fro m the stream to the power house through an open channel, ditch, flume or pipe The water returns to the stream the same way. A water wheel or turbine then converts power of the water to rotating mechanical power Turbines usually are smaller and more efficient than water wheels, Wheeler explained They turn at higher speeds and are less affected by water level than are water wheels. The third part of the system is an e le c tric a l generator. It may be in dependent or it may be in terconnected with u tility power lines. An interconnected system is the simplest and most econom ical type of in stallation A benefit of this arrangement is that the u tility buys excess power when the microhydro system generates more than is used — at night, for instance — and sells the homeowners power when it ’s needed An independent system, on the other hand, is isolated from other electric lines, including the electric u tility. T his m ay be due to u n a v a ila b ility of u tility power, high cost of installing u tility power or sim ply the desire to be energy in dependent The first step for people who are thinking about that counts, Wheeler ex microhydro is to measure the plained head (vertical drop at the Oregonians who are in site) and water flow rate. terested in microhydro can This inform ation is needed to get help from a variety of- estimate the amount of sources. The state of power that can be generated Oregon has two main sources and to determine what type of inform ation ( call toll free and size of system would best 800-452-7813). suit their site, Wheeler ex plained The average residential energy consumption is 36 kilowatt-hours per day, and a stream one foot wide and four inches deep, flowing at two miles an hour, w ith a 30 inch drop between the water inlet and turbine should You s h o u ld g e t it provide that much power D o u b le s th e p le a s u re 1 A larger stream with a smaller drop could generate as much power.
