Thur*., Feb 5, S U H S ju n io r re a d y fo r P e r u Kelly Spradling exchange student program costs. When she was scheduled to depart on Feb. 13 instead of in July, she was caught short. Her parents. Chuck and Pat Spradling of C herryville, took out a $1,900 student loan from AFS, but last week the fam ily s till had ap proxim ately $1,200 to raise. The Spradlings have been con tacting conununity groups to solicit sponsorship, and said they are surprised and th rille d by the response. By Monday, the Kiwanis Club of Sandy had contributed $250, the Elks Club $100, and the Optimists $100. Other groups, including the Chamber of Commerce and the Mt. Hood Recreation Association, had indicated their intention to donate. To raise the balance, a benefit pizza party is scheduled at Buck- board Pizza in Sandy this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Tickets w ill be sold at the door. The fam ily and their friends are also selling tickets throughout the community this week. “ John McMahan and Dennis Crow (SUHS principal and ric e - p rin c ip a l) ha ve been really plugging for me at meetings around tow n," Spradling said. Among the expenses on Spradling’s list is a $115 estimate for a school uniform , a requirement in the Peruvian school she w ill attend with the teen-age daughter of her host fam ily. She is scheduled to meet the ^Peruvian fam ily Feb. 21, her 17th birthday. The fa m ily lives in a larger, two-story house located in a town of 280,(100. The father is a joint owner of an electrical appliance store. Spradling doesn’t appear to be fazed by the sudden change in plans or by living in a home or attending a school where only Spanish is spoken. “ I ’m totally happy with the thought of going to Peru,” she said. “ One thing s for sure,” her father added. “ We know she’ll learn a new language.” Hoodland happenings. POST —3 Respite center offers families help Despite no warning A Sandy Union High School student recently learned that she has just three weeks to prepare for a year’s stint in a foreign country. Kelly Spradling, a junior at Sandy High, applied last October to the American Field Service ( AFS) as a foreign exchange student. Because she has studied F re n c h , she specified a northern hemisphere location, thinking she would be assigned to a European fam ily. Spradling was told to expect word back by late December, and when she hadn't been notified of her ac ceptance by January, she proceeded with her plans to graduate from high school a year early. Then, on Jan. 21, she received a surprise packet in the m a il: photos and a detailed introduction to an AFS host fam ily. Their location: P iura, Peru 'Die six members of the Peruvian fam ily speak no English; Spradling speaks no Spanish But she plunged undaunted into preparations for the experience, including raising funds, obtaining a passport and receiving innoculations. If Spradling had been assigned to a European location, departure date for her year abroad would have been m id -su m m e r. B ut exchange students in the southern hemisphere leave in February, when it is sum m ertim e at their destination. Her assignment to South America created complications for Spradling. She expected to be able to earn a sizable portion of the $3,500 the 1981 MWSTERS SHOES FOR JUNIO RS 27 NW 1 st Gresham, Oregon (A a oss from Glass Butterfly, Downtown) 667*2470 A re sp ite center fo r fam ilies of developmentally disabled children opened last week at Clackamas Com m unity College Sponsored in part by T ri- County Respite Care, the Clackamas Respite Center o ffe rs fa m ilie s a b rie f reprieve from the demands of ca rin g fo r th e ir developinentally disabled children.
