It is interesting to watch many of the
state s newspapers in their coverage of the
Portland Trail Blazers this year
After the first 25 games, the Blazers were
all but buried Not only in the Pacific
Division, but in the media as well Suddenly.
Portland is winning again and the Blazers
are the darlings of Oregon once more
One of the more candid view s expressed of
late was by Oregonian columnist Bart
Wnght. who had ripped the Trail Blazers to
shreds early in the season He is the kind of
writer you either love or hate and a lot of
readers chose the latter But Wright had the
courage to publicly admit that he made an
error in stating that the Blazers didn't have a
prayer to make the playoffs He also
promised not to wTite any more obituaries on
the Portland team this year
Everyone seemed to have their own
opinion on what was the problem with the
early-season Blazers Luckily, few writers
become coaches of an NBA franchise.
After the first two weeks of the season I
wTote that the Blazers needed some new
blood — not so much on their roster, but in
the coaching position And w’hile Jack
Ramsay remains the ever-popular mentor of
Portland. I still believe that it was the fresh
blood that provided the Blazer turnaround
Ramsay has a history of arriving at a
troubled franchise, then turning it
immediately into a playoff contender. But.
after four years or so. things usually go stale
The Blazers have been stale the past year
Not only at the beginning of this season, but
all last year The problem is that Ramsay
has a doctorate and not many of his players
are all that cerebral His system is just too
complex for most NBA players.
The 1977 cham pionship team was
different. Bill Walton has been accused of
doing some unintelligent things, but no one
can deny his court saavy. Maurice Lucas,
Bob Gross and Lionel Hollins were also
intelligent players and had no trouble
grasping the Ramsay system
season was the Garden of Eden for
Dr, Jack It was the pot at the end of the
raifitfow The ultimate in team basketball
and a style of play that the NBA hadn’t seen
in a great long while.
It was hard to let go of and it took Ramsay
until this season to realize it. He may never
have another team that had the chemistry of
the Blazer squad. He may have teams with
more talent, but never one that played so
well together and with such intelligence.
But Ramsay didn't become Dr. Jack by-
being a complete idiot. After the Blazers
floundered early in the year, he decided to
change his system That's not an easy thing
for a coach to do. Admittedly, a well-
conditioned Kelvin Ransey had a lot to do
with Portland's success, but so did a
sim plified offensive p a ttern and the
establishment of roles on the team
It was such a simple solution that Ramsay
probably overlooked it while drawing Xs and
Os Even now. at the end of a game. Ramsay
will be diagramming a crucial play and at
the end of his lecture, Billy Ray Bates will
simply tell his teammates to “ stick it in the
basket” That's a lot easier than figuring out
Xs and Os.
The Blazers do. indeed, have fresh blood.
It began from the head coaching position and
spread throughout the team And the
revitalized Blazers have recaptured the days
of Blazermania

Not really Then again Ramsay has done as
much as a turnaround as the Blazer team,
and in a sense Portland did, indeed, get a
new coach

The teams were tied 40-40
after Bob Nipperf sank a pair
of free throws to cap a nice
Pioneer ra lly. But seconds
later Nippert got nailed in
the chin and had to be
removed from the game And
Sandy coach Dennis Warren
was none too happy about the
turn of events.
"B ob got knocked to the
floor and there was no foul
called,” Warren charged.
‘‘Then, while he was on the
floor, he got kicked in the
chin. There was s till no call
and he had blood dripping
from his face. Heck, he had
to have stitches.”
Excuse Warren if he isn't
too fond of road trips to
Silverton. This is the second
straight year that he has
come away feeling that the
officials have done a shoddy
job and Warren is not one to
complain about the of
ficia tin g Salem officials are
used in Silverton's games

That turned the tide in
favor of the Huskies. Sandy
had won four matches in a
row. but w ith the pin. Sweet
Home regained the lead and
never lost it.

point decision over Sandy s
Scott Skipper at 178.154. The
match was delayed when the
official was knocked out by
an accidental buck to the
face.
Sweet Home clinched the
match at 191 when Bill
Ensley pinned Randy Car-
mony at 1.23 fo r the firs t
round
Sandy got its final points in
the heavyweight match as
junior T im Svtsma rolled to
another victory' w ith a hard-
fought 3-3 decision over Dave
Corliss.
The Huskies won the
match in the lighter weights
They won four erf the first five
matches and three of those
victories came by falls,
worth six points apiece.
Sandy's only breakthrough
early came from sophomore
Larry Topliff. who nailed
Jerry Mathews after just 33
seconds, the fastest pin of the
night T o p liff s win was in the
opening match. 98 pounds
But the Huskies went on a
ro ll after th a t Scott Weld
pinned B ill Mathews in the
106-pound match at 4 40

areas,” he said. "B u t our
zone defense was a lot better
than it has been. We still
gave up the baseline two or
three times fo r laytns and
that should never happen
That's a cardinal sin in our
basketball philosopy
“We got the shots we
wanted, but we didn't take
enough,”
Warren added
"B u t I was pleased w ith the
very way the kids played It
was a seesaw battle the
whole way and they hung in
there. We just didn’t get the
breaks at the end when we
needed them ."

"1 was a little upset at their
referees, but that shouldn't
have been a fa cto r," Warren
said. "We had several op
portunities to open up a lead
down the stretch and we
didn't convert. Both teams
pla yed fa irly well overall,
but we didn't execute our
offense very well. That was
the first time we'd seen a
man-to-man defense in quite
a w hile."
