Sue Wilson helped her State team
gain a split with M etro in the All-Star
Basketball series.
Cleland sparked her M etro team to a
five-game win over State in the AlkStar
Volleyball series.
M ike M artin claimed an 8-2 win over
Robert Arbuckle of North Bend in the
157-pound division of the All-Star
Wrestling Series.
M ike Sheppard took second place in
the U.S. Cycling Federation district
race and qualified for nationals, despite
having ridden competitively for Just
three weeks.

Chris Jones took first place at 149
pounds in the Northwest AAU regional
wrestling championships, qualifying
for nationals.
Paola’s Pizza B a m Legion team
pulled off its best win of the year by
claiming a 2-1 win over Putnam.
Putnam had won last year by a 38-3
score.
Sid Christie of Gresham won the
annual Almost 10-Kilometer Run, a
part of the Sandy Mountain Festival.
Troy Hilstad, Doug Crane and
Michelle Crane all placed at state for
the Blue M arlin Aquatic Club.
D avid Janzen and Jennifer Trenwith
qualfied for the r a tio n a l in freestyle
roller skating.
Coast to Coast won the Midget
Federal League basketball title.
AUGUST
The Sandy Blues placed fourth in the
state in Junior girls softball.
Coast to Coast placed fourth in the
state in baseball.
A record number of entries and the
best purse ever highlighted the
Clackamas County rodeo at the end of
the summer.
Paola’s Pizza B a m won the state title
in men’s slow pitch softball in the “ D ”
division.
Wooden Hutch claimed the city title
in slow pitch softball with a pair of wins
over Ron’s No Place.
F a ll practice began for Sandy High
teams and O 'M eara began his duties as
football coach.
SEPTEM BER
The season began slowly for the
Sandy gridders who went through the
month with a win. Jackson blanked
them in the season opener. 26-0
The Sandy volleyball team faced
some of the top teams in the state and
got off to a slow start.
Things were brighter on the soccer
field where Sandy won a pair of
preseason games after going 0-14 a
year ago.
Also impressive was the girls cross
country team, but the boys struggled.
OCTOBER
Deer hunting took precedent around
the state with mixed reports of success
and frustration.
*• Kathie George rewrote the record
book for the Sandy High gymnastics
team, leading the Pioneers to wins in
October. She was helped by freshman
Jacqui Pullen.
The girls cross country team con
tinued to defeat everyone in sight while
the boys improved gradually
The soccer hopes began to fade and
the football team still searched for its
initial victory. That win finally came on
Halloween night against Molalla. Sandy
won 14-0.
NOVEMBER
F o r the second straight year, the
Sandy girls cross country team won at
district. Gayle Roth, l^aura Stringham
and Donna Nelson led the way and
Sandy went on to place sixth in the state
meet.
The Sandy volleyball team had to
struggle to make the state playoffs,
then posted a big upset over second-
ranked Beaverton. The Pioneers lost a
squeaker to Corvallis, the UCLA of girls
volleyball, and finished fourth in the
state. Cherie E llio tt and Colene
McDonald gained all-star honors.
DECEMBER
One of the oldest barnstorming
basketball teams in the country came
to Sandy when the Harlem Clowns
made an appearance in the Sandy gym.
A new winter sports season opened as
the Sandy girls basketball team rolled
to a surprising 3-1 start.
Inexperience hurt the Sandy boys
who returned Just one letterman, 6-foot-
4 Bob Nippert. Sandy opened to the tune
of a 2-4 record.
Wrestling promised to be the strong
boys sport again as M ike Russell, Dan
M artin and Chris Jones all started
impressively. Jones defeated state
champ K ris Pihl 6-4.
