Inexperience plagues Pioneer fall sports program
One Last weeKend of leisure
remains before Sandy High
athletes w ill have their
va ca tio n s
come
to
a
premature end
Practice
begins Aug 25 far mast fa ll

Making predictions prior
to the firs t game of the year
can be a hazardous oc
cupation and this year is no
exception Many of the Sandy
teams w ill be depending on
newcomers tc fill in and
those new people could mean
the difference between a
playoff spot and a short
seasor.
FOOTBALL
The Pioneers w ill be
coached by Greg O'Meara,
who w ill make his varsity
debut Only seven players
returr. from Last year's team,
and those people have little
experience. The two most
proven players appear to be
quarterback John Allen and
tailback John M artin
Inexperience seems to be
the m ajor hurdle that the
Sandy gndders w ill have to
conquer
.Alien or Mitch.
Paola should prove capable
at quarterback and the
Pioneers
running
backs
should also be adequate. A
key to the offense w ill be how
quickly O'Meara and coach
Jim Saxton can get the
inexperienced
but poten
tially strong line to jell
Seniors Alien Fry’, Tony
Childress and juniors Dale
Rasmussen. Tim Sytsma and
Dave Paugt should be vital
cogs in that line
Sandy w ill run the veer
r»ptior. this year the same
offense as last seasor. The
Pioneers finished with a 4-5
record last seasor. and lost
most of those people to
graduation Oregon City and
West Linn finished one-two in
the T im ber Valley League,
and O'Meara said it may
happen again
V O LLE Y BA LL
Sandy w ill be hard-pressed
to duplicate its success of
last year
The Pioneers
swept through the league
undefeated and fin is h e d
second ir. the state
But gone are valuable
seniors Micneie Geiand and
Christie E llio tt and those two
may be d ifficu lt to replace
Geiand was all-state and one
of the most powerful spikers
in Oregon.
Coach Ron Grantz returns
Cherie E llio tt, last year s
most consistent all-around
player, and setter Coleen
Macl*onaid Both were all-
league and second team, all-
state They alone should be
enough to make the Pioneers
competitive in the league
The spixing of juniors Julie
Coiemar. and Dawn New
may be a key to just bow
competitive Sandy w ill be
The Pioneers w ill have a
tough preseasor. slate Sandy
opens against perennial slate
power St M a ry ’s .Academy,
ther goes to Barlow for a
tournament which includes
five of the state s top six
finishers last year
The Pioneers w ill get their
feet wet early and Grantz
should learn rig h t off the bat
just what Sandy w ill need to
do to make it three league
titles ir. a row
SOCCER
It would be nara to imagine
a more d iffic u lt seasor. than
the one experienced by the
Sandy soccer team last year
With a roster of mostly fresh
men and sophomores, the
Pioneers struggled all seasor.
and finished with an 0-14
record
U nfortunately. the three
seniors who did graduate
were three of the Pioneers
best play ers But coach Lon
Welsh's team has matured
over the summer and in
tim idation shouldn't be the
factor that it was last year.
Sandy has p o te n tia lly
excellent goalie in E arl
Pierson, a sophomore who
did an adequate job last year
in his rookie season What
the Pioneers lacked last
season was an offensive
threat, to take the pressure
off the Sandy defense
GYMNASTICS
G y m n a s tic s

produce the best team in
recent years at Sandy
Coach Teresa H i eresen has
back a young sophomore
named Kathie George and
that should be enough to
throw a few scares into
opponents George placed
th ird in the district as a
freshman in the all-around
competition and should move
on to tougher routines this
year
Joining the soph is a junior.
Janice Hawkins. Hawkins is
also capable of scoring high
point totals and is a strong
all-around
perform er
as
well
A nu m b e r of P ioneer
gymnasts w ill also return
from last year s young team.
Sophomore Mary Russell
should be tough in the floor
exercise. Pans M artin is in
the floor and beam. Done
Ikxison and Kecia H am s
have experience on the
uneven parallel bars
