The unexpected was commonplace

It wasn't the best oi tunes to
h a w a poor basketball game, but
in a w ay. it summed up the Sandy
High season rather w ell It was
unexpected
The Pioneer boys team went
into Canby last week needing a
win over the Cougars or a loss by
Oregon City to Silverton to make
the league playoffs The chances
of Sandy making the playoffs
were pretty fair But Oregon Qty-
played one of its better road
games and Canby played one of
its better home games and Sandy
won't see any playoff action
unless the Pioneers buy a ticket.

didn't get the job done on the

The unexpected is something
that the Pioneers had come to
accept over the course of the
season Injuries played a key role
throughout much of the season
Rick M artin missed a few early
games at guard, hut came back
strong after an arm injury . Tom
C u rtis su ffered a s e ve rely
sprained ankle and it took him
quite a while to get back to form.

although sophomore Bob Nippert
moved up to varsity early in the
season With an all-senior lineup,
many
people expected the
Pioneers to have an outstanding
season. hut they forgot that many
of the Sandy players had little or
no varsity experience
Sandy also lacked a legitmate
big man and played the entire
year with forwards in the post
position.
Guard was sigiposed to be the
weak point with little experience
and no proven ball handlers. But
Kent Reick stepped in as the top
guard and team leader and made
contributions that many fans
may not have seen.
“ 1 was really pleased with Kent
and his development." W arren
said "H e just did an outstanding
job for us this season You know,
early in the year we were sup
posed to vulnerable at the guard
spot
But I can't remember
anyone really pressuring us that
much with any success. ’ *
The fact that Sandy had a
senior-lader. team won’t help a
great deal next year. Only
Nippert w ill return w ith varsity
ex p e rien ce and W a rre n is
ah ea d } looking ahead to what
can be done to shorten the
learning process for next year's
team

are one way to cut some corners
The fact that much of this ye ar’s
junior varsity w ill be next y e a r’s
varsity- m ay also help in a way
The players will know each
other's moves and style of play
and the fam iliarity w ill be one
advantage But you can bet that
W arren wouldn’t turn down a 6-
foot-8 transfer student if one was
lurking about
Basketball itself is getting as
tough as the competition
" I t ’s getting harder and harder
for the kids to compete these
days." W arren said “ Practice
isn’t as easy as it used to be With

Head “ He wrestled tough,
the way we decided to do.

at placing in the nationals

at 7-7 for league play

overall Sandy ended up one win
away from a spot in the league
playoffs, two wins away from a
possible state berth.
The disappointment remains
from the season-ending loss to
Canby.
But when th a t is
forgotten, the success of the
season w ill
begin to shine
through.
"In total, I ’m very pleased with
the kids this y e a r." W arren said.
“ Sure, we would have liked to
have ended up in a playoff
position, and the kids were
disappointed too. but they played
a lot of good basketball this year
And they came a long way
Attitude-wise, I coulcbi’t have
asked for a better tea m .” be
added "They practiced hard and
prepared themselves mentally
for a game I was pleased with
the os fori they put in.
“ It was a fun group. I think the
kids had fun," W arren added. “I
know I did "
