County fair boosters form
Since it began as a sort of
tent city fa rm festival over
70 years ago. the Clackamas
County F a ir has evolved into
an established tradition for
generations of Clackamas
County citizens.
To keep that tra d itio n alive
and to enhance the im pact of
the annual event on the
region’s social and economic
life is the goal of a group of
fa ir enthusiasts who want to
form a Clackamas Coiaity
F a ir Boosters Club.
S parked by G e ra ld in e
Herdt of Tualatin, the group
has
scheduled
an
organization meeting for
Thursday evening, Feb. 28.
at the main pavilion on the
fairgrounds at Canby Time
fo r the meeting is 7:30 p.m.
“ The fa ir means a great
deal
to
thousands
of
Clackamas County residents
and we'd like to see a lot of

The Tualatin woman has

successful m o n th ly
flea
m arkets at the fairgrounds to
benefit the 4-H building fund,
but she said this a ctiv ity
over-all fa ir e ffo rt
"O ur fa ir, among the tops
in Oregon, is a valuable
com m unity asset and we
cannot afford to let its
grounds
or
fa c ilitie s
deteriorate,”
Herdt says
She said that a dedicated
organization such as a fa ir
Booster Club could generate
needed public support and
raise money for fairgrounds
upkeep.
Noting that there has been
much grass roots agitation

ticipation, Je rry Mickelaen,
fa ir manager, says she is
pleased w ith the in itia tiv e
being taken by Herdt and her
group.
"Many people don’t realize
just how completely the
county fairgrounds complex
has become a year around
fa c ility ,” Mickeisen said.
This year's fa ir, the 74th
annual e ve n t w ill be held
Tuesday through Saturday,
August 12-16. The 1980 theme,
Mickeisen says, is “ An Old
Fashioned F a ir.”
