The small patch of “dirty " snow above was the only snow within sight of the sign. The stubborn patch of snow was lying in a gully along the highway. Hit song written in 20 minutes It was a hot day in July 1945 in Toluca Lake, and two young songw riters were ¡ooking for a way to cool off. So, they began to think of images of ice and snow Jack Frost nipping at your nose and the folks dressed up like Eskimos And presto, 19-year-old Mel Torme and 22-year-old Bob W ells w ro te “ The Christmas Song ” In 20 min utes It was an immediate hit when Nat “ King” Cole re corded it in 1946. and has endured through the years as a standard of the Christ mas season. It has been re corded countless tim es through the years, and un doubtedly provided Torme and Wells with a lifelong annuity But what makes “ The Christmas Song” unique among the legions of holiday tunes is its smooth, urbane polish Alone among modem Christmas songs, it seems to be aimed at adults, not chil dren Its simple but always evo cative images ride along on an equally guileless, yet memorable melody, and one does not need to make allow ances for it. “ The Christmas Song” could be a success even without a holiday season to nde on I t ’s a Christmas song that even a jaded hip- Scci van love. Mel Torme, certainly, is nothing if not hip. Today, he is a singer pop ular with both jazz and adult popular audiences He is known for his unerring taste and his flair for applying a jazz sensibility to Tin Pan Alley classics He has written a new holi day song, “ Christmas Was Made for Children,” but he was happy one recent after noon to reminisce about “ The Christmas Song ’ ’ “ It has given both Bob and myself a kind of semi eminence in the business be cause we wrote a song that has endured for so long,” he acknowledges “ I t ’s just like Walter Gross and Jack Law rence. who wrote Tenderly’ o r E r r o ll G a rn e r and ’Misty.' .Any tunes with the ability to last always en hance the career of the composer ” Torme recalled that the song was written “ in July on one of the hottest days I can remember in Toluca Lake. It was 1945 We really wToie it because it was a very hot day and we wanted to enol off I t ’s really that simple. “ Other than the fact that i t w as w r it t e n in 20 minutes.” Did they realize they’d written a standard*’ “ I thought we had written a helluva song,” Torme said “ I didn’t know that we had written a long-lasting standard. Hood Community College campus Michael Giammatteo and his wife Dolores, fam ily and marriage counselors from the Sylvan In s titu te in Vancouver, Wash., w ill be conducting the 9 a.m until 4 p.m. session. The Giam matteos have conducted previous MHCC workshops for community, students and s ta ff m embers. Arrangements were made by Gratton and M aryan Bohnenstingel, counselor. The session w ill be held in the campus Town and Gown room. A box lunch is included in the registration fee of >2.50.
