Sandy one muscle short of district sweep
;
Versatility and depth were the keys
for the Sandy girls, while the boys came
up one pulled muscle short in last
weekend's Coast-Valley league district
meet.
Sandy's girls were in total command
after Thursday's preliminaries — the
rest of the teams were in a battle for
second place
The Pioneer boys were caught in that
latter position after a pulled muscle
forced senior Jeff Hill to scratch out of
both hurdle races Without the services
of Hill, the Pioneers saw their hopes of
a district sweep go down the drain as
Newberg's boys piled up the points in
the field events to clinch the victory.
Newberg scored 894 points for the
win, followed by Sandy with 79 and
Canby with 75 Sandy's girls won easily
with 107 points ahead of Forest Grove
with M and Newberg with 53
"Without Jeff Hill, it really put the
pressure on the boys to compete,'*
Sandy coach Handy Hutchinson said,
"and in moot cases, they did
"We figured the spread to be about 18
points without Hill competing and we
cut it down to 10,“ he added “ I t ’s
probably the best competitive effort
we’ve had out of the boys all year “
RECORDS FALL
The Sandy girls probably could have
gotten by with a less than maximum
effort and still won district but it is
doubtful that the coaching staff would
have allowed any let up So it was no
real surprise that school records fell in
droves at the Sandy High track
Michele Cleland started things off in
the girls javelin with a throw of 153-0, a
season's best by several feet and a
school record Unfortunately, it only
got her a second place, as Newberg's
Linda Hughes cut loose with a throw of
16711 for the win.
"Michele competed real well in the
javelin," Hutchinson said. "H er throw
ranks her third in the state and fourth in
the nation
"She also came back in the discus
which has been her most stable event
all year." Hutchinson noted "Michele
rises to the occasion for big meets ”
