Chapel marks new beginnings by P I I I L G R A R L E Post c o rre x p o n d rn t New beginnings are the h a llm a rk of the Chapel of the H ills near Brightwood A new pastor, a new youth director and a new building are among the fresh starts the congregation is making. New pastor Kent Mckinnon opened last Sunday’s sermon w ith an unusual visual aid: his own young son, Kyle. M ckinnon’» sermon dealt w ith the inherent sinfulness of the human nature. “ A ch ild makes a perfect exam ple of man's con d itio n ,” he said, pure and innocent on the outside but sick and sinful on the inside . " M ckinnon is currently a student at Western Con servative Baptist Seminary in P ortland, where he w ill be graduating in June. He began his pastorate at the Chapel of the H ills in December, 1978. M ike Whisner, a graduate of P ra irie Bible Institute in Canada, is fillin g the role of youth pastor while working as a lifeguard at Bowm an’s golf course Whisner has started a ‘ Hi- L ife ’ youth a c tiv ity night, on which a group of teenagers gather F rida y nights at the Woodland Women’s Club. “ Our goal is to provide kids in the m ountain area w ith a chance to get to know other C hristian kids and give them something to do together," he said. "W e usually play ping-pong or some other games, have some food and a good tim e ." The original Chapel of the H ills burned down four years ago. The chapel was located on the north side of Highway 26 west of its junction w ith Sleepy Hollow Hoad. The congregation now meets in the Mountain Grange on Sleepy Hollow Hoad, but they are anticipating a move into th e ir newly-completed build ing on the original site. " I ’ll be glad to get into the new b u ild in g ," congregation m em ber Betty King said, "l^a st w inter we had to bring our blankets to church ( in the grange) to keep from freezing during the ser m ons." "W e ’re a com m unity Bible church, and th a t’s really been an asset," Whisner said. "T h a t way w e’ve been able to make people of all denominations feel welcome in our s e rvice ."
