POST Thun Moy Ì ( S t 3) SUHS student’s winning essay takes her east Linda Sue Sooter. a senior at Sandy High School, is the statewide winner of the national Ability Counts essay contest for her entry on employment of the handicapped Miss Sotter spent this week in Wash ington, D.C. taking part in the national awards ceremonies She will be awarded a certificate from the Disabled American Veterans The essayist also won a $550 scholarship from Weyerhauser Co. Foundation and round trip air fare to Washington plus $100 spending money from the Oregon AFL-CIO Blue Cross of Oregon also donated $150 to cover Miss Sooter's expenses as she traveled to the annual meeting of the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, where the awards will be presented The Ability Counts contest is open to high school juniors and seniors 1970 was the Slst year the contest has been held Miss Sooter also entered last year's competition and placed third on the state level This year's essay was entitled "A Ramp Is A Step Head ” Miss Sooter will use the scholarship to study physical therapy at Pacific University in Forest Grove She said writing the essays on the handicapped helped her decide on physical therapy as a career The essay maximum length was three typewritten pages, or less than 1,000 words Miss Sooter said it involved considerable effort and application on her part " I love to w rite.” she said. “ I t ’s one of my favorite things to do And while I was working on this essay. I breathed it, lived it. thought about it constantly.” The Ability Counts contest is designed to increase awareness among young people of the abilities and em ployment needs of handicapped people It is sponsored on the national level by the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, the Disabled American Veterans, and the AFL-CIO. The contest is sponsored in Oregon by the Governor's Committee on Employ ment of the Handicapped. Weyerhauser Co. Foundation. Michael R Plumlee. son of M r and Mrs. James Plumlee of Boring, recently completed One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning. Ga He will earn credits towards an associate degree in applied sciences though the Community College of the Air Force while attending basic and other Air Force technical OSUT is a 12 week period which combines basic combat training and advanced individual training The training included weapons qualifications, squad tactics, patrolling, landmine warfare, field com munications and combat operations This qualifies the soldier as a light w eapons infantry man and as an indirect fire crewman Logerwell enlists Richard D Logerwell. son of M r and Mrs Robert L. Logerwell of Sandy, recently enlisted in the United States Air Force. Airman Logerwell departed April 27 for Lackland Air Force Base.
