★ * Spring edition * * Daylight savings time begins Stats show runaway problem Statistics released last week by the Clackamas County Juvenile Depart ment show that the largest single of fense by Sandy-area young people is running away from borne The yearly referral report shows that 63 youths are picked up in 1978 after they had been reported as runaways Of that total, 45 were juvenile girls According to Joan Le Barron of the Juvenile Department, most of those referred were handled on an “ unof ficial" basis by the department That means the youths were recommended for informal supervision, referred to the Job Corps or to an agency for private counseling In most cases, the juveniles were released to their parents One problem, according to Linda Nickerson, juvenile court counselor, is the lack of counseling resources Young people have to drive to Gresham or Portland “ We can only do so much, so it is a crisis situation We try to refer them to agencies in their community," she said Most cases involving juveniles do avoid the court system in the Sandy area Last year there were 299 reported referrals for delinquency by the juvenile department. Only 91 went through the court system Nickerson, who counsels in the Sandy, Estacada and Sam Barlow areas, said she handles everything from drugs to burglary Last year 29 young people were referred through the juvenile department on burglary charges. Shoplifting offenses accounted for a large percentage of referrals The department referred 53 young people for that offense, yet only seven were handled in the court system Nickerson said the county tries to deal with the young people on an in dividual basis. Several different options are discussed before probation is recommended In the case of theft or shoplifting, Nickerson talks with the young person about it. " I want to know if the kid understands the seriousness of what he or she has done," she said. Nickerson tries to discover if the youth feels like an active member of the family That is a growing problem Last year, 28 young people were referred through the system for home ad justment problems and ungovernable <— --------------------------------------------------------- behavior. In most instances, the young person is just looking for someone who can communicate with him or her on their own level. “Sandy being a small community, they try to live it to the hilt,” Nickerson said. The juvenile department tries to give the young people a chance to live a different kind of life The Sandy area is fourth in the county in referrals, according to Nickerson. Those referrals do include major offenses Last year 15 juveniles, 14 of them male, were referred after they had been arrested for unauthor lied use of an automobile Others were referred for criminal activity in drugs, arson and criminal mischief, although in smaller numbers --------------------------------------------- Inside The Post Inside Business......................................... G iam m atteo is a psychologist-author whose con versation and written prose are refreshingly free of jargon, which comes as no surprise when one learns his philosophy. Giammatteo. founder of the Sylvan Institute for Mental Health, believes that a major flaw of con temporary American society is that the individual is unable to make meaningful contact. Prize catch SHO W IN G O F F her prize-winning catch is Droada Fischer of Sandy. Trapped man rescued A uto accidents kill 2, injure 3 Two traffic accidents in the Sandy area thia week left two people dead and three others hospitalized A Portland couple died Sunday af ternoon when their pickup truck collided with a station wagon on U.S. Highway 26 at Alder Creek, between Sandy and Rhododendron. The victims were identified as Ronald William Page. 41. and his wife, Alaila Rae Page, 40 A fourth person was trapped in the overturned vehicle for approximately 40 minutes, according to Clackamas County deputy Bob Burch According to Burch, the Jeep Wagoneer driven by a 16-year old Duane William Happold was traveling along the bumpy road when Happold attempted to step on the brakes and over corrected. The car flipped over throwing one passenger, Gregory (4dven Tebo, 17. from the vehicle Happold was thrown clear as the car overturned a second time, according to the sheriff’s department, and a third passenger, Gregory Alan Kuykendall was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned a third time. All three were taken to Gresham Giammatteo will be at Sandy High School April 30 presenting several workshops on self-destructive behavior. His presentations are com m only considered "d ru g education seminars.“ but that is too narrow a label, in his thinking. “ My main focus is on self- d e f e a t i n g , s e lf - d e s t r u c t i v e b e h a v io r," G iam m atteo said. “ Drugs are only a small part of it. A workaholic is also indulging in self- abusive patterns." Giammatteo's background in cludes extensive work with human development. His undergraduate and graduate degrees were earned in biomedical research and human development at Temple University in Philadelphia and the University of Pittsburgh From 1968 to 1970 he served as consultant to the White House Conference on Children and Youth. In 1970 he did a feasability study for the World Health Organization on drug education in the schools. The course of Giammatteo's career has led him to some original conclusions His theory on the four levels of isolation is the basis for much of his therapy. In an accident late Tuesday morning, four Sandy youths escaped serious injury when the car in which they were riding went out of control on Bornstedt Road and rolled over three times The driver aixi two passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Noel Allen, 16. was pinned in the overturned vehicle, trapped between a seat and the roof of the car After he was freed by Sandy firefighters, he was reported in fair condition. He cited a four fold isolation which is common: (1) the inaccessibility of people to people, (2) the inac cessibility of people to systems; <3) the inaccessibility of people to data, and (4) the inaccessibility of people to feelings NO EL A L L E N trapped Inside car in Bornstedt Road accident. Community Hospital where they were treated and released Community Hospital and Meinyer was taken to Portland Adventist Medical According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the Happold vehicle flipped in midair over Tebo as he was laying on the ground and avoided crushing him Center. The accident is under investigation and no citations have been issued In the accident Sunday, Oregon State Police reported that the Page vehicle was traveling west on U.S. Highway 26 when it collided with a station wagon driven by Gordon Dale Rodewan, 20, of Portland. Rodewan and his passenger. Thomas Richard Meinyer, 16, also of Portland, were critically injured. Rodewan was taken to Gresham State police said the Page pickup was carrying external gasoline tanks and one ruptured on impact, causing the vehicle to bum According to witnesses, the Page vehicle was engulfed in flame as it went over the bank of the road. The Hoodland Fire Department responded to the accident and were credited by a spokesman from the Sandy Fire Department, which also responded in a backup position, with doing a commendable job. State police are investigating the cause of the accident The individual often finds it dif ficult to connect with other people, or with systems which might help him or her grow, Giammatteo said. “ Heaven help you if you’re the wrong age or color" when you apply for help, he pointed out. Young people often suffer from inaccessibility to data as well, he explained. They may not have ac curate information about what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. " If the only models they have use and abuse drugs, bow can they get adequate data about the destructive effects?" he asked Inaccessibility to feelings is another common problem, in Giammatteo’s view Many people find it difficult to act on their own feelings, and instead react to those of others “We are not a preventive society — we are a reactive society," he said. His emphasis in workshops and sun photo D r. M ikeG iam m atte o personal therapy is to help the in dividual break free of the apathetic mentality which merely conforms to outside influences. Giam m atteo’s goal of prevention is achieved by developing a “ par ticipatory m entality” — a state of mind in which the individual takes part in the world and directs his or her own course. G ia m m a tte o w ill speak to students, high school staff members and the community at large in three separate talks Monday He will return for future workshops to train interested community members in "drug prevention techniques, or more accurately, development of personality so that self destructive behavior does not arise. Giammatteo's presentation will deal with individual goals and dreams, with pride and self esteem. “ How do I receive esteem from others? How may I build my own?" are questions he will discuss He will also talk about acceptance — “ May I indeed dare to differ’’ " The key, he said, to many young people's involvem ent in s e lf destructive behavior is inclusion. If one can achieve instant in clusion by joining five friends who are smoking a joint, but it takes five months to gain acceptance by becoming an A student, the former choice is often too easy to make Giammatteo also works actively for sex equity, and conducts workshops for women in management He is president and deputy director of Sylvan Mental Health Institutes, which has six centers nationwide He is in private practice at the Sylvan Institute in Vancouver, Wash., which is housed in a simple frame dwelling in a business and residential district. The architecture is fully in keeping with the psychologist's philosophy. “ We have made systems so frig h te n in g ," he pointed out. “People are wary of institutions. That’s why every Sylvan Institute is in a house, instead of a big white, institutional building "
