1 0 - SANDY (Ora.) POST Thur». March I 197« (Sac. 2) Oregon scientists to explore ocean this month Six Oregon State University oceanographers will play leading and sup porting roles in March when a team of American marine scientists explores a section of sea floor that has hot springs and unique animal colonies that are sustained 14 miles down by the nutrient -rich warm water Professors John B Corliss and Louis I. Gordon will be among the explorers who go to the bottom of the ocean in a 22-foot research sub marine. Milo flauson. Roberta (B obbi) Conard, M arie DeAngelis and Marvin Lilley will be members of the support team aboard surface vessels. DeAngelis is a graduate student. The others are fu ll-tim e research assistants The dives will start about March 5 near the Galapagos Jalands, which are 500 miles off the west'coaST of Soqfh America's Ecuador. * 'Corhss and Gordon have been to the bottom there before They were members of a 1977 history-making expedition that discovered the sea floor hot springs and the unique biological activity around them. Clauson and Lilley provided scientific support then too “ The findings were so significant — essentially all the animals brought back were new organisms — and the unanswered questions so numerous that the follow-ig) expedition was planned." Corliss observed He headed the 1977 expedition. The work is funded bv the US O ffice of N aval Research and the National Science Foundation. The surface vessels are from Woods Hole (Mass ) Oceanographic Institution and the Vnnersitv of Miami. Fla Surface vessels had helped to locate the dive sites in 1977. Ship-lowered in struments recorded the sudden changes in tern perature that suggested hot springs flow- Submanne hot springs are believed to be a major factor in the formation of metal- rich sediments on the sea floor The hot springs also affect the chemistry of sea w ater and could even represent a potential geothermal resource some day, Corliss said. The U S. research sub marine used, the Alvin, is equipped so the scientists can bring back water, rock, sediment and organism samples and thousands of photos. Observations are expected also to provide new insight into processes of sea floor spreading That involves the formation of new crust that comes up as molten material through the cracks in the sea floor The spreading also helps transport the w ater- saturated crust and metal- rich sediments to land, an explanation for the mineral riches of the Andes Moun tains that are on the west coast of South America The OSU scientists will be part of the third and last leg of the exploration Teams of biologists and geologists have gone down earlier The final group will concentrate on the chemistry of the hot springs and surrounding waters “ We’ll go back to some of the same hot springs as two years ago." Corliss noted "That will give us an un derstanding of what has happened in the interim to the springs and the animal colonies “ But we'll also go to the east and west a mile or so to look at several new and warmer springs that have been found this year." Twenty-four dives during an eight-hour trip were made to the sea floor in 1977 Corliss made 10 and Gordon three About 10 dives will be made by each of the three teams this year. OSU's Jack Dymond also made 10 trips to the ocean floor two years ago; research assistants Debra Stakes and Mitchell Lyle made one each The three will not be party members this time, Corliss said. National Geographic is filming segments of this year's expedition for television and movie showing The magazine carried a lengthy report on the first expedition in its October 1977 issue Summer music program set The Second Annual Music Day Camp in Portland is set for July 9-20 at the Music D epartm en t of W arner P acific College. Co sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Oregon and the college, the camp is made possible in part by a grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Fund. Enrollment is limited to 100 students from grade school through college. Instructions will be available to students of strings, piano, winds, horns, and voice. Theory and composition will be part of the in struction Beginners are lim ite d to students of stringed instruments; ad vanced students are ac cepted in all categories College students and upper class high school students have the opportunity to earn college credit by registering harg* for an additional two weeks and paying the college fee. Persons wishn^ to do this should contact Dr. Miller Deadline for registration is May 1. Application forms are available after March 1 at Schuback Violin Shop. 1022 SW Morrison.
