'Tis the season to draw your chairs around the warm,
flickering light of the television set and settle down
together for some good old fashioned family viewing On
the nigh, before Christmas, two offerings— NBC's Amahl
and the Night Visitors’ and CBS's The Nutcracker'—
provide excellent family entertainment as well as an
opportunity for creative conversation. The holiday
excitement, already crackling in the air, sets the scene
for special family sharing
The key to transforming passive viewing into an
active learning experience is preparation One wouldn't
attend an unfamiliar opera or play without firs, reading
a libretto or a critc's review, or asking a friend for an
opinion Your children's viewing will be more fruitful if
there is preparation
Before seeing the Christmas opera, tell your children
something about Amahl. the lame boy Discuss wha, a
handicap means to a child and the importance of a
crutch Explain that an opera is a drama set to music,
that the singing and the orchestra heighten the emotions
It may interest your children to know that this particular
opera, written by Gian-Carlo Menotti. was filmed on
location in Israe1 and in a studio in England
Thirteen-year-old Robert Sapolsky stars as Amahl along
with a cast of Metropolitan Opera performers
After viewing the program, encourage your child to
express his or her feelings about the ending Was it a
surprise to find that Amahl was miraculously cured when
he offered his crutch— his most precious possession— as
a gif, to the new-born Christ child? How did the music
convey the emotions of the character? You may want
to discuss the young actor who portrays Amahl— how is
his life the same or different from other young
people's?
Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland, the brilliant
ballet stars, dance in Baryshnikov's firs, choreographic
effort. The Nutcracker ' Before viewing this classic ballet
based on a tale by E T A Hoffman, obtain a recording
and give your child the opportunity to hear Tchaikovsky's
unforgettable musical score Your children may not be
able to sit still during the rousing March of the Tin
Soldiers,' so encourage them to interpret the music with
their own actions They will soon be marching gleefully
around the room, unaware of their enjoyment of
"classical" music. Explain to them that ballet is just
that— using dance movements to act out a story or
express feelings
Again, as with Amahl,' talk about the emotions of
the characters. Have your children ever dreamed, like
little Clara, that a favorite toy has come to life? What
other dreams have they had? You may be surprised at
the imaginative responses you receive But be prepared
to answer questions as well as ask them. Don't be afraid
to say, "I don't know the answer, bu, let's talk about it
or look it up '' That may open a whole new set of ideas
to share
Christmas and Chanukah are times of joy and
sharing— why not share the joy of television with your
family ?
