LeFlore, who impresses Martin with his
tremendous raw talent
Bravo for the new image of the child in the After
School Special 'One of a Kind.’ airing on ABC-TV on
Wednesday. Sept. 27. On one familiar, sweetly
old-fashioned level, ‘One of a Kind' is a story of a lonely
child, called upon by her single mother to assume too
much responsibility and finding solace in talking
puppets On another level, it describes the growth of
a very competent 10-year-old girl.
Lizzie sees in the violent "tra d itio n a l" Punch and
Judy show a replaying of her own unhappy life with
her mother. She writes her own more human, gentle
script. Her m other sees Liz's play and understands her
child better. They come together, better able to
cope
Clearly, Liz is a much stronger child than the waif
who was saved by the carnival puppeteer in the movie
‘Lili.’ She is as comfortable with language and complex
thoughts as any of the adult characters but she is
stronger, more moral and inventive— in all ways a
thoroughly com petent girl.
Being denigrated by superficial writers is as much
a problem for children as it is for women, so it is with
great relief that I find this show doesn't put kids down,
even in kindness In fact, tne 10-year-old Lizzie does
most of the teaching She is a youngster who gets
justifiably angry, who fights for what she wants and
finds creative solutions that do solve problems
Add to this the obvious delights kids have in
puppets, the behind-the-scenes aspect of the
puppeteer who “ talks" through his dolls, the carnival
atmosphere, and you have a show which will engage
charm and benefit your children— and you
On a deeper level, it is the story of Carrie, the
mother toughened by her life, trying to find a bit of
relief from dreariness, annoyed by her daughter s
unwillingness to help shoulder the burdens and
responsibilities of th e ir d ifficu lt existence
Her
impatience with Liz, her inability to give unqualified
love, her broken promises, her unwillingness to allow
her child time to be a child raises thoughtful
issues.
Despite the rational rhetoric, we see that if both
the child's needs and the m other's needs are
considered seriously (but are actually violated by
economic realities), an ideal resolution of the problems
posed in One of a Kind* is unlikely. The show should
move families to do some hard thinking.
