OSU constructs
solar facility
SiEGEunnnnyi
A solar rad ia tio n fie ld
research facility, consisting
of a laboratory and a 160 foot
meteorological tower, has
been constructed on an
Oregon State University
research farm, setting the
stage for the most extensive
Northwest research ever in
solar energy

equipm ent, are the key
elements in the program
Funding is from the U S.
Department of Energy.
The field research facility
w ill be used to take year-
round readings of the solar
radiation reaching the earth
on days of all kinds — clear
and sunny, cloudy and rainy,
foggy and freezing. Findings
are expected to give the best
guide yet to the true solar
energy potential of the area
The mobile solar radiation
research van w ill be used to
take
measurements
at
selected sites in Region 5 of
the
US.
—
Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana
and Wyoming. The five-state
regional program is part of a
national solar energy effort

It’s the next generation of microwave ovens —ready for
you today. More advanced than any other microwave
o ve n ...ye t simple as 1-2-3.
The Amana Automatic Temperature Control System cooks meats to
perfection! Gives you meats more moist and tender than ever before
possible in a microwave oven—with virtually no turning Allows you to
cook meats ai.d many other foods to the desired serving temperature —
with remarkable accuracy!
Temperature Hold. Touchmatic II can also cook to
desired temperature and hold it — gently cycling
power on and off to maintain the temperature you
select This gentle cycling is what allows meats to be
cooked more moist and tender then ever before in a microwave oven
Also great for holding meats, casseroles, soups, almost any food at
serving temperature for even the latest of late comers.

“ P ublic awareness and
education” are involved too,
Rao observed. ‘‘Solar index
reports and forecasts w ill be
developed and distributed to
the mass media. These w ill
tell, for example, what levels
of household energy could be
supplied by home solar
collection panels today and
tomorrow.’’
Each regional program is
supported by a m illio n -
dollar, five-year grant from
“ The research facility w ill
be operational in a couple of
months,” Rao added. “ The
tower w ill be particularly
useful in determining how
persistent fogs affect solar
radiation.”
The instruments on the
tower w ill provide a host of
meteorological information
including temperature, dew
points, w ind speeds and
direction, etc., in addition to
measuring solar radiation
levels near the ground and at
different heights. Tethered
balloons and instrumented
helicopters w ill be used as
experimental platforms in
the coming year.
“ OSU and the seven other
regional centers w ill become
the bench mark sites for
s o la r
r a d ia tio n
measurements across the
c o u n try ,” Rao explained.
“ They w ill also be the
collection

meteorological data of all
kinds
“ The research program is
a very large, very important
cooperative national ven
ture,” Rao said. He earlier
worked in solar radiation-
energy programs at UCLA
for 17 years. Hewson is a well
known leader in the solar
energy field also. He has
pioneered
wind
power
studies in recent years.
The training program in
solar radiation and energy is
as comprehensive and vital
as the research, it was noted.
It w ill involve training for
teachers, students and
w orking professionals as
well as providing source
material for the general
public.
Persons interested in
learning more about the
project and its results may
contact the Department of
Atm ospheric Sciences at
