Cowboys yip it up at the fair

The 1978 Clackamas County
Fair wound up on a wet note
Sunday, as a steady drizzle
dampened competitors and
spectators at the special rodeo
at the Canby Fairgrounds.
The cowboys (and girls) got
the worst end of the deal as the
arena was turned into a
quagmire by late afternoon.
But rain or shine — or mud, the
rodeo must go on.
Competition was held in calf
roping, barrel racing, bareback
and saddle bronc nding, wild
cow milking and bull riding.
And in most cases, nature
teamed with the animals to
upset the cowboys’ plans.
The calf roDers found the
rope a bit too slippery to throw
accurately or the rain made a
bucking bronco just that much
harder to ride.
But there was one con
solation: the cowboys found
that the mud was a pretty soft
place to land.
