Pacific Trail
use discussed
The advisory council for
the Pacific Crest National
Scenic Trail w ill discuss trail
needs and use — and overuse
— during its annual meeting
July 31 and Aug 12.
The meeting w ill begin at
Sedro Woolley. Wash., and be
followed by two days of field
review in the North Cascades
National Park and Okanogan
N atio na l
Forest.
The
meeting is sponsored by the«
National Park Service and
the Forest Service.
Protection of lands along
the trail from overuse is a
concern of the 30-member
council, particularly where
the tra il crosses designated
Wilderness areas.
Other topics of discussion
w ill include the need of
rights-of-w ay
fo r
con
struction of tra il segments,
trail signs, use of volunteers,
location of trailhead and
overnight cam ping spots,
reduction of regulations
imposed on users and
coordination between the
management agencies
The trail extends from
Canada to Mexico and is
approximately 2500 miles in
length. About 500 miles are in
Washington and 440 in
Oregon.
In the Pacific Northwest,
the route crosses mostly
National Forest lands, but 58
miles are through National
Parks and a few miles on
state and p riv a te lands
Some 34 miles of new con-
stru ctio n are needed in
Oregon and Washington to
avoid detours Nearly 200
m iles w ill req uire some
reconstruction in the next
few years.
The trail was one of the
first of two in the United
States designated as a
National Scenic Trail, by the
Congress in 1964
