subject’s eccentric quality

Don't expect a lyrical,
sensitive study of an artist
at work when you tune in
the PBS special NORTH
STAR: MARK DI SUVERO
on Tuesday. July 18. For
just by the very nature of
its subject, the world-
renowned
44-year-old
metal sculptor, the film
itself is idiosyncratic and
elusive.
A presentation of sta

NORTH STAR: MARK DI
SUVERO, conceived and
written by art critic Barbar-
a Rose and directed and
photographed by Francois
de Menil. tries to attune
itself to the moods and
lifestyles of the artist,
whose massive creations
involving the welding of
iron and steel materials
have been displayed in
many environments from
the parks and playgrounds
of New York City to the
beautiful Tuileries Gardens
of Paris, where in 1975 his
was the firs t one-man
exhibit dedicated to a living
artist.
As the filmmakers try to
pm the erratic di Suvero to
settle down and talk about
his art. bits and pieces of
his
background
are
revealed to the viewer He
was born of expatriate
Italian parents living in
occupied China and has
seen quite a bit of the
world since. He divides his
. work in the film between
an abandoned factory by
the River Saone in Chalon-
Sur-Saone, France, and his
Front Street studio in New
York.
"What the meaning of
your a rt? ” di Suervo flip
pantly replies to the film-
makers’ queries. "That's
like asking w hat's the
meaning of your life!"
That’s hardly one of di
Suvero's more profound
revelations during the hour
but he does manage a few
observations on the ideas
behind his art, much of
which has been either m
tribute or protest. “ An
artist has to reject what
society is doing in order to
be a true artist.” he says
“ In order to create your
own universe you have to
reject what society puts
forth
as
the
real
universe ’’

The artist has known
loneliness and he has
made such rejections. In
March of 1960. di Suvero
suffered a near-fatal eleva
tor accident which left him
paralyzed Not many of his
doctors had much hope for
his recovery so it was up to
the victim himself to come
up with some. He worked
him self up to walking
unaided by 1965 The
accident left cynical scars
which have colored his
creations since that time.
" I became crazed by the
accident,” di Suvero ad
mits. “ There was a great
deal of physical terror and
agony but my greatest fear
was that I'd never sculpt
again."
Many of his works of the
1960s and '70s are studied
by the camera, with the
images nicely augmented
by a pulsing original score
by avant-garde composer

his voice of protest at the
time and despite the tu r
bulent periods of student
unrest, the war dragged on
and di Suvero’s patience
ran out. He left the country
for France, swearing not to
return until the divisive war
ended.
The scenes in which di
Suvero and his crew hoist
the girders and steel plates
to be welded together are
amusing vignettes of an
antic craftsman at work. Di
Suvero's creations are the
finished products of a great
deal of manpower and it's
no wonder that when he is
asked what the most excit
ing moment in producing
his works is. he says with
an astonished gush, "When
she stands!"
It's not easy to get inside
the mind of di Suvero and
mixed opinions of his work
are put forth in the special.
People passing by one of di
Suvero's outdoor sculp
tures on the streets of
Paris and New York are
sometimes less than enth
usiastic about the looming
steel and iron bulk standing
next to them. Di Suvero is
indeed an acquired taste.
According
to
Dons
Freedman, chairman of the
Public Arts Council, "You
cannot just plunk down a
piece of contemporary art
in the public sector People
don't understand because
you can't get them to
interpret the work. The
general public isn't largely
exposed to avant-garde
art. We think that just
because we have these
great cultural institutions
that avant-garde art can
become accessible."
Art critic Robert Hughes
points to di Suvero s work
as being characterized by
great energy and intensity.
Those
hose qualitu
qualities are appar

well as his creations but
the energy is of an intense
ly personal kind that the
special cannot convey to
the casual viewer
As the scraggly-haired,
bearded artist reflects. "I
don't provide a normal
entry to sculpture Only if

Filmmaker creates
educating experience
for self, others

Documentary filmmaker Ofra Bikel discovered a
unique way to educate herself about the South American
democracy of Colombia she made a film about it That
film, entitled Bogota, One Day.' provided a fascinating
look at the various classes of people that inhabit that
city and proved to be quite an educating 90 minutes
when it was shown on the critically-acclaimed PBS senes
World' last month
"I knew nothing about it.” she cordially admitted m
a recent publicity interview in New York "M y assignment
was to cover some aspect of life in South America I took
a chance and loved the people of Colombia I found them
incredibly charming and polite ”
What the award-winning director, who has nearly 20
years worth of credits in American. British and Israeli
television, found was a land of sharp contrasts despite
its democratic system and dispassionate as it was. the
film nonetheless created a great sympathy for the lower
class residents profiled, especially the gamines,
homeless children who live a daily hand-to-mouth
existence.
"They were so happy that someone noticed and paid
attention to them.” Miss Bikel said "Colombia seems
like the most orphaned nation Much of it is so
untouched and beautiful and nobody makes anything of
it. There are no villains there that anyone can put the
finger on. It's just that nobody cares "
For balance, the film also looked at the activities of
a nouveau riche businessman and a government
administrator who deals with rural farmers. But the
heart of the film lies m the inner-city images of several
families living in various rooms of once-great mansions
and struggling to get along "Millions in Bogota make
only as much as (the equivalent of) 75 cents a day."
Miss Bikel said When the family is large, the hardships
multiply.
The big money is in contraband and Miss Bikel and
her crew got a lesson on how the money changes hands
and captured it on film Her cameras shot scenes of
merchants openly selling and displaying black market
goods on the street with groups of policemen idly
standing nearby It was another instance of people not
taking any notice
One thing she learned from past experience was the
value of having a reliable technical crew m unfamiliar
territory. "I assembled the crew myself," she said, from
people with whose work she was closely familiar She
added that there were no labs available to develop the
film on a daily basis so everything had to be shot and
shipped back unseen for processing in the U S She cited
cameraman Adam Greenberg as having saved my life"
several times over for improvising ways to continue
shooting when equipment wasn't functioning at its
best
‘World’ wraps up its series of new offerings in August
and it's now awaiting word of possible renewal for next
year. Miss Bikel said she'd like to be part of that second
season. "I'm most interested in doing something on Italy
or Spam and this time I'd want to try focusing on just
one person instead of several," she reflected But
whatever she learns on her new filmmaking experience
Miss Bikel will be sure to hold nothing back in passing
on the benefit of her skills and knowledge to the
^udience.
