Speed didn’t make you a winner last
Saturday at a tra il riding event for
Clackamas County 4-Hers
“ This was a competitive tra il ride,
not an endurance ride,” said Lucy Hall,
an Eagle Creek 4-H leader who
organized the event held on the Eagle
Creek Trail.
The tra il ride was set up to follow, as
closely as possibly, the rules of the
North American T ra il Riders Con
ference.
There were 43 youngsters entered in
last week’s ride. They were judged on
horsemanship and were also required
to submit their horses to the careful
scrutiny of a veterinarian who checked
pulse, respiration and condition before
and after the ride.
The wet and soggy morning didn’t
seem to dampen much of the en
thusiasm of the participants who made
the 12 mile round trip.
Plans are already under way for next
year’s ride
Eighteen 4-H horse clubs were
represented on Saturday.
“ I ’ll bet there w ill be some kids who
sleep tonight — including me,” said
horsemanship judge B ill Taylor as he
watched the last leg of the ride.
“ Tomorrow they’ll talk about what a
horrible ride it was,’ ’ he said. “ By the
second day, they’ll only remember the
good parts and w ill be raring to go
again next year.”
