Prune lilacs w ith care
When lilacs bloom they are
doing
more than just
creating beautiful flowers.
They also are producing
their new annual growth and
next year’s blossom buds
“ This growth pattern
means there is no time of
year that a lilac can be
pruned without removing
some flower buds,” says
G ray
Thompson,
OSU
Extension
agent
for
Clackamas County.
To get around this, a lilac
should be pruned so that only
non-flowering
wood
is
removed. Flower blooms are
produced from large buds on
the ends of vigorous new
growth.
On the other hand, lateral
growth and spindly growth
rarely produce blooms. Both
types of growth should be
removed in the winter, but
can be cut out any time of
year.
Annual pruning, though not
essential, will keep the lilac
nnii Nome Finns
bush in good vigor,Thorny
son said. Renovation of old
bushes should be done in the
winter. They can be cut back
severely while leaving most
of the framework so new
growth can rebuild the bush.
Even so, one year’s bloom
will be lost.
“ Cutting the lilac flowers
to bring indoors also reduces
next year’s blooms.
But
unless the bulk of the
blossoms are cut, it is not a
serious problem,’’ Thompson
noted.
As soon as the bloom
period is over, however, it is
advisable to remove the old
blossom heads.
