4 - SANDY (Ore I POST Thun.. Sept 8. 197? IS « 21 The energy corner New column helps answer Clackamas County energy questions by D.C. Cooper Clackamas County “ T h e r e a r e n o g a in s w it h o u t p a in t * * Benjamin Franklin In this age of m ultiplying crises — international, govern mental, environmental, personal—it seems fitting to harken back to the calm no- nonsense words of one of this nation s greatest men. As America struggles toward its goal of energy self suf ficiency, we are suffering through many pains We cringe as we tear open our u tility bills and shake our heads in dismay as we watch the counters spin wildly at our local gas station. The pain is there, you agree, but where is the gain? Why, in your pocketbook, of course. That is, if you’re open to some of the information available to you What kind of information can swell your pocketbook and drive the bristling dragons of winter far from your humble abode? Hopefully, you’ll find that answer here in this column. While not a panacea, this tiny space can provide valuable tips about energy conservation, and news of increased tax breaks for home weatherization, and information on Clackamas County energy programs. In addition there w ill be hints on recycling, solar power and cost efficiency. Buried here and there w ill be explanations of some of the more complex energy issues, both local and national. Are you confused over the debate between public and private utilities? Have you become lost among the 100 pages of small print in President Carter's Energy proposal? Together we may just be able to separate the mountain of energy gobbledygook into some useful, money saving ideas. From time to time we ll publish statements of county policy, which should clear up confusion If not. we can always try again. much electricity your lights down the energy road and tell use, or your new hair dryer, or you what we see. And if this column is not that ancient firebox skulking enough, there is an energy around the basement Where does the juice come specialist in each of the five from? Where does it flow? How community centers capable of much of our precious elec fillin g the gaps that un tric ity is sold to industry and fortunately must exist with such limited space as we have who are the m ajor users? Will there be enough natural here. The column is open to energy gas in five years? W ill there be any petroleum in 20? We’ll look questions of all kinds and we We'll explain the step by step procedure for performing a complete Energy Audit of your home. The audit w ill show you where your home heating and cooling dollar is going, and where the best use of your energy dollar can be spent to rectify the situation. You may want to know which home appliances are most efficient, or inefficient. How welcome your interest. Our home is Clackamas County Housing, 511 Main St. Oregon City, 97045, and our phone number if 655-8593. We are very interested in seeing how others are dealing or refusing to deal with our energy situation.
