8 - SANDY (Ore.) POST Thurs., June 16. 1977 (Sec 2) W elches D istrict eyes growth Middle school seen as need in future First in a series of article« on fulure growth in the Welches School District. by Sue Lafky Post editor Chances are good that the Welches Elementary School D istrict w ill need to build a middle school in the early 1960s to accommodate a growing student population That’s the word from a studv and master plan developed by the University of Oregon Field Training and Service Bureau and a Wilsonville planning firm . Members of the Welches School Board Monday night reviewed the master plan with Kon Shew bridge from the planning firm of Balsiger- Peterson-Shewbridge and Associates. Slow steady growth is predicted for the district—an approximate five per cent rate each year. “ B u ild ing capacity for program and then the specific plan to suit the program.” The report noted that ‘‘by recognizing the (grow th) problem now the school hoard and community have a unique opportunity to study and ex plore the types of educational programs Welches Elementary School should provide its graduates before they enter Sandy HighSchool.” Although the existing elementary building is ex pected to hit capacity by the 198081 school year, the board was advised to watch population and building trends closely before gthat date. “ If even one land develop ment expansion occurs with the district the capacity may be reached at an earlier date,’’ the report said. “ The district should initiate action to acquire sufficient land to begin con struction of a middle school to be ready for approximately 1<M> students in grades seven and eight by September 1980-81 ” The report recommends that the hoard and superintendent board w ill be free to add or delete building suggestions as the need arises. The architects and their educational consultant, Dr Jack Nelson fro m the U n iv e rs ity of Oregon, developed the guide based on enrollment increases per 100 students “ Hopefully, this master plan w ill give the district direction,” Shewbridgc said. “ But before any b uilding program is initiated, the district must develop the educational housing students w ill be reached or exceeded in the 1979-80 school year.” according to the report. “ However, it is entirely possible this level may be reached in 1978-79. The Welches board asked the planning firm to develop a master plan guide for the district to enable the board to establish a definite approach to grow th needs Welches Supt. Jack Callaghan has stressed that the guide is just that—a guide The Nell's notes Nell realizes 40 year by Nell Howe Vera B ittm a n recently stepped across the road to visit a friend. When she returned, someone had cut a hole in her back door glass and entered her house and stole some money. It may have not seemed like a ot of money to the thieves, but o Vera it was quite a bit. Sure Irish we could catch these haracters that continue to reak and enter so many places >n the mountain. Got to realize one of my mbitions that I have had for he past 40 years. The weather was great, and the rain came in the evening while we were eating It was ju s t in tim e to freshen everything up, and we worked outside until dark.
