10 SANDY (Ore l POST Thurs.. June 16, 1977 (Sec. 1) On the road A most noble endeavor critic to understand the artist's message. Give him some time to tell his story, and you might come away with a new friend in that artist. From there, wander to your left into a very different age. that of Pre-Columbian Central America, the land of the Incas. These people never invented the wheel, yet their calendars far exceeded ours for accuracy and their surgeons performed delicate brain surgery with stone tools. These con tradictions become apparent in th e ir art, which is both grotesque and beautiful. Clay figurines scowl and stick out their tongues from behind their glass partitions, and a splendid stone jaguar reclines beofe you. its back flattened for use as a grinding surface for making corn meal. Next door, see a chunk of our own Northwest heritage in one of the finest exhibits of North west Coast Indian art in the nation The more transient lifestyle of these peoples is reflected in their art, as it is generally light and portable, and much of it consists of decorative a rt on tools, wea pons a nd u te ns i Is. Of interest to any fisherman would be the display of huge halibut hooks used by the coast natives, their shanks carved great art is animated and personal and transcends the barriers of culture, time and learning A taste for this most noble of all human endeavors can be had in the extremely pleasant surroundings of the Portland Art Museum. Oregon’s largest metropolitan art center and one of the two oldest art museums on the West Coast. But the term “ museum” is not really applicable here, as that conjures up immediate visions of dark, dusty corridors and fossilized Brontosauri lumbering off into antiquity. Upon entering the Portland Art Museum, the immediate im pression is of soothing habitability as the foyer is large and softly lit, with enough standing art displayed there to create interest but not clutter. Take a moment to get oriented, and enjoy the large panels of modern art on tne walls Modern art often gives people the most trouble of any art. “ But what does it mean?” they will ask Well, what does it mean? Try to find out for yourself. You say you don’t like it? Why not? What do you think the artist is trying to say? What affect does the color, texture or shape have on you? Is the mood light, or weighty? You needn’t be an art by Douglas Gantenbein staff writer The great nineteenth-century art critic, John Ruskin, once wrote: “ Great nations write their autobiographies in three manuscripts, the book of their deeds, the book of their words and the book of their art. Not one of these books can be un derstood unless we read the two others, but of the three the only trustworthy one is the last,” So it is that to get a really accurate picture of a civilization, its hopes, fears and dreams the wisest course is to examine their buildings, not their books or science. Even the great Leonardo’s scientific work is now dusty and obsolete while his paintings, such as the immortal “ Mona Lisa“ are as alive and vibrant today as they ever were. Art is the signature of a civilisation. Indeed, it is often the only accurate barometer of civilisation as art in any form rarely develops until a culture is established and is no longer so preoccupied with mere survival that it hasn’t the time for anything else. Most importantly, it should be realized that art is not the stuffy, snobbish thing it is so often pictured to be. Here, com pare style, brush strokes and the use of color to make yourself an instant art critic. For example, compare the delicate tones and wispy brush strokes of a very French and Rococo Boucher with the bold, impressionistic work of Monet, whose “ Waterlilies” is perhaps the museum's most famous piece. Keep in mind that no work of art exists in a vacuum. For instance, the minute detail of a Dutch still life by Willem Kalf can be traced back a thousand years to his Viking forebearers, whose love for fine, delicate artistry is evidenced in their intricate jewelry and sword hilts. Even those towering Gothic cathedrals dotting Europe and bristling with spires and crennelations owe a direct stylistic heritage to the tiny, portable decorations the Vikings treasured. Unfortunately, one of the most crucial periods of art is not especially well represented. The Kress collection of Renaissance art is spotty and WHO IS that guy. and what in the world 1 b he looking at? An exhibit of American statuary by Duane Hanson Is drawing second looks at the Portland Art Museum small, and some of the works spotlighted are not truly Renaissance. The Bronzino work, while a fine painting, is in fact an example of Mannerist art, a form developed in reaction to the earlier true or High Renaissance. Still, the reverence for their subjects the Renaissance ar tists had can be felt, along with their deep religious fervor. south of the downtown area, on be part of the exhibit!
