Thurs., Dec. 2. 1976 SANDY (Ore.) POST - 7 I Hapless homemaker Rai ndrops keep fouling up her phone X I I have a fair weather telephone it only works when the sunshines. As anyone who has lived here more than a week knows, my phone will be inoperable until next July when the rain quits My telephone line, like a cheap raincoat, is no longer waterproof The slightest drop of moisture and Niagara roars in my ear I catch about every third word. Since the party on the other end can’t hear the roar we have odd one-way conversations property could land me in jail with the right to only one phone call. I ’ll accept that offer if they can promise me a noise- free connection Just in case, I call my attorney: “ Help, I ’m trapped in suburbia without a phone and I ’ve worn out two hockey sticks.” “ Don’t worry,” he says, “ I'll write the phone company and demand they bring you a new stick.” At least I think that’s what he said. Finally a repairman comes and says they’ll fix my phone sometime between next week and eternity. “ In the meantime,” he advises, “ it might help to hit the line with a stick Just don’t miss and hit the electric line.” On rainy days my neighbors watch me slog out to the phone line and beat it furiously with a hockey stick. “ Nice form,” comments my neighbor who suggests that if I break the line the phone company would be obligated to fix it. The phone company advises that destruction of their “ What noise, lady?” says the man I calk'd at the telephone company I couldn’t hear when he promised to send a repairman loiter when the doctor called, I missed the part where he said the capsules were to be inserted instead of taken by mouth My rriother responds to my calls by blasting a police whistle My brother gave up trying to talk and promised to write which is about as likely as his turning up at the front door selling Avon.
