Legal counsel office gets approval Clackamas County Board of C o m m is s io n e rs Tuesday created a special county legal counsel office. It was the second time in November that the commission had taken such an action The order is effective Dec. 15, pending approval of the plan by county civil service officials. Ihe first order to create legal counsel, adopted Nov. 7, was rescinded Monday after commissioners learned they needed civil service approval of the action. C o m m is s io n e r R o b e rt Schumacher said repeal of the firs t order had p o litica l overtones and was brought about by James 0 ’lx‘ary’s opposition to the plan O’Leary w ill replace Roger Rook as district attorney on Jan. 3. O’Leary told commissioners Tuesday he was not properly consulted about creation of the legal counsel office. The plan w ill reduce the number of deputies on the district at torney's staff from ten to eight, he said Schumacher said the legal counsel office was created to insure that Mike Montgomery, chief deputy district attorney, and Scott Parker, the deputy district attorney who has been counsel for the county com mission through the district attorney’s office for three years, remain with the counsel. Both men were considering leaving county service when O’Leary replaced Rook, commissioners said. Creation of the legal counsel office w ill elimimate the civil duties of deputy district at torneys. After Jan 3, the district attorney’s office w ill handle only crim inal matters. o oo If you think turkey is that big bird we serve only on holiday occasions, you’re wrong!
