Buttonholing, he added, just stirs up antagonism Grable pointed out that in the Bible, Jesus is never shown “cramming it down their throat.” Students celebrate lunch week Cottrell School observed the recent National School Lunch Week by holding a coloring contest for first through third graders emphazing the im portance of good nutrition. The colorful entries, which consisted of pictures of Jack Sprat and his wife, were displayed in the West Gym and “ Living a Christian life, backed up by the reality of Christ in an individual life .” is what the Sandy Baptist Chapel is trying to convey, G rable said. winning posters were selected by volunteer aides. Winners included Tammy Peterson, Cissy Wiebold, Eddy Garrison, Tina Sitser and Scott The church is a fellowship and not a denomination, stressed Grable. That means there are no ties to a church hierarchy and that the church is run by a democratic congregational government, with the local congregation serving as the authority of the church. Tlie Sandy Baptist Chapel is part of the Conservative Baptist Association. Grable said there are many types of Baptist churches and beliefs vary somewhat. “Baptist is a canopy that covers many, many people.” he said He said most Baptist churches believe what are known as the historic Baptist distinctives These distinctives include soul liberty — the equality of individual believers in relation to each other, their competency in spiritual matters, the freedom of direct competency in spiritual matters, the freedom of direct access individually to God, and the freedom to worship or not worship according to one's own con science Another distinctive is the desire to regenerate church membership. The Baptists believe the church is a spiritual and not a wordly organization. Therefore, they say “only born-again Christians are suitable candidates for church mem bership.” The church also believes in the in dependence of the local church and the separation of church and state. Kennedy. The school cook Goldie Sandblast, asked third graders to plan their favorite menu for one of the lunches. Kirk Walker planned a menu of weiner wraps and other requests which will be served on Thursday. Dec. 8. The women, organized by church member Connie Whitlock, take craft projects to the prison jail on Thursday afternoons and show concern for the women The key is that they show interest in the women as people, said Grable The women have seen responses from a nu mber of women in the jail. “ Hearts are really won through these women,” Grable said of the ministry, "It adds excitement to our whole church.” Family involement is stressed through an annual family campout and father-son events The women of the church, along with non-church members from the com mumty, hold a Thursday morning Bible study led by Mrs Grable More than 100 women regularly participate in the class 668-4902 1 1 I We Care At INTERNATIONAL PLUMBING SUPPLY Morsa Welcome I 39100 Proctor Blvd. Across from Trail Plaza full time director of Christian Education, Dave Winchester Winchester will have been with the church for two years this January and teaches an adult Sunday School which has more than doubled since he’s been teaching it. Attendance in the class runs from 50 60 each Sunday. Grable said the church is looking toward expansion The present structure is reaching capacity and can hold 125 people maximum Approximately 200 people attend church at Sandy Baptist Chapel. Grable said The actual church membership is less than that, he added. “We emphasize active members.” he said. A balance between teaching, evangelism, sharing and service is also emphasized in the church, he said “As we minister to one another, we are ministered to,” Grable sid. “ Many of the needs of the Christian life can only be met in the context of serving others.” The final report on the job referrals for teenagers. lack of interest or failure to Clackamas County “Jobs for Rook said this year’s show up. This is described as being “the process whereby believers are made partakers of God's holiness in a continuous work of the Holy Spirit.” “Life begins not with a reformation, but a transformation,” Grable said of Christianity. Grable said "more of the image of Christ should be visable as we walk with the Lord.” A person wishing to become a member of the Sandy Baptist Chapel must be fully immersed in water for bat ism Grable said he believed that was the mode that best expressed the meaning of baptism—which is an “outward sign or testimony of an inward work of grace.” Grable said he’s seen a tremendous increase in youth interest in “spiritual things.” Sandy Baptist Chapel has a student from Multnomah School of the Bible serving as a part time youth director. Sunday evenings the youth meet for a social hour. According to Grable. this time stresses fun and recreation, but does feature a Christian message to the youth. On Tuesday evenings approximately 10- 12 young people are involved in an in-depth Bible study. Two other students from Multnomah School of the Bible meet with the junior high age young people in the church. Grable said the church also participates in some activities with other Sandy area churches. “They go to school together, and we see no reason why they shouldn't know each other in a church relationship,” said Grable. Grable also supports a once a month luncheon attended by ministers from churches in the Sandy area Right now the ministers are studying the book of I Corinthians The purpose of the meetings are to “understand each other’s church and to understand and appreciate one another,” Grable said.
