Y (Ore.) POST Thurs., Sept 16, 1976 Fire department says Early warning detectors save lives by Sue Lafky, Sandy Post editor Sandy F ire m a n Don Armintrout finds it ironic that people will spend from $50-$300 to insure personal property but not spend $50 once in a lifetime to protect their life. He also finds it ironic that people will spend an average on $275 on their teeth each year, but not enough on fire prevention to measure a per centage Sandy F ire D epartm en t volunteers are currently selling Smokegards — early warning smoke and heat detectors for FredMeyer Quik- Sew Classes h o m e o w n e r's in s u ra n c e fire safety to contact the Sandy policies for the installation and F ire Department maintainence of home fire detectors and many companies are considering discounts Armintrout said although some may consider the selling of smoke detectors by volun teers a somewhat radical move, the department’s goal is to stress prevention “ Previously we spent 96 per cent of our time on fire sup pression and 5 per cent of our time in fire prevention We're trying to change that,” said .Armintrout. "W e have put on program displays, spread it by mouth to people on the street we're willing to do anything that will reduce loss of life or property T H E S M O K E detectors damage provide early warning In the A rm in tro u t said the borne. According to the Insurance In fo rm atio n In stitu te in Seattle, this type of detector offers the earliest warning and perhaps the best protection “ And if we get there earlier, we can put out the fire earlier,” added Armintrout. Other types of fire-smoke de tectors cu rren tly being marketed include the photo elec ric. flame and thermal The ionization detector basically senses gases in the air and provides a fire warning on the gases given off from a fire often long before smoke builds up It also gives off a warning before flames become intense enough to set off a thermal detector Armintrout said his depart ment recommends that an average size home have at least one ionization device as primary protection, preferably located on the ceiling im m ediately outside the bedrooms. The Insurance Information Institute has recommended that home owners desiring greater protection augment the basic system with flame and-or thermal operated devices in the kitchen, garage and furnace rooms The institute said the next stop in improved fire protection would be to have the various detecting devices w ired together for sim ultaneous warning The institute added that the sensitivity of the ionization and photoelectric devices makes them undesirable for use in the kitchen, garage or furnace room But it is this sensitivity that makes them desirable for use near bedrooms where early warning is necessary.
