Gridders honored on all-star list
Pioneers end season, 2-7
The Sandy Pioneers dropped
a heartbreaker Friday in their
last football game of the
season, losing to Newberg. 8-6.
The Sandy defense stopped
three Tiger scoring drives
before Pat Casey of the visiting
squad ran in from the seven to
open scoring Newberg’s Scott
Steifbold made good a 2-point
conversion attempt for what
proved to be the winning
margin.
The opposing teams settled
down into a defensive battle
until two minutes from the end
of the season Tim Veley
plunged in from the one for
Sandy 's only points.
A possible tie was missed on
the conversion attempt and an
outside kick attempt on the
following
kick-off
was
recovered by Newberg
The visitors ran out the clock
leaving Sandy with a 2-7 record
for the 1975 varsity football
season
Following the game Pioneer
coach Woody Allen praised his
players for "never giving up on
themselves, despite a disap
pointing season"
Sandy rushed for a total of 209
yards against 223 for the
Tigers.
The Newberg squad also
added 20 yards of passing for a
game mark of 243 yards
Sandy quarterback Scott
Cravens missed both of his pass
attempts and had one in­
terception Tlie Tigers com­
pleted one of their two throwing
tries
Newberg lost one of its three
fumbles and Sandy lost one ball
in four fumbles

Despite a 2-7 season record the Sandy
Union High School varsity football squad
shared top honors on the Coast Valley
Division All-Star teams.
Eight first team members were named
from the Pioneer squad to the all-stars
while Estacada had seven players picked
Sandy end Jack Paola and tackle
Richard Dyal were named to both the
offense and defense teams.
Receiving honorable mention were
Pioneers Larry Dahkle as defensive end.
Randy Keller as offensive split receiver,
Erank Douglas as offensive guard and
Scott Cravens as quarterback.

Halloween party for a troop
from Rockwood area recently
The eight girls from Cottrell

Ewing, Julie Clark, Colleen
Cleary. Lisa Krogh, Anna
Peterson, Mollie Smith and
Kim Currin.
Their leader is Jewell Lamb
who is assisted by Elouise
Cleary
The girls came in costumes
and refreshments were served
The Cottrell girls furnished
pumpkins donated by various
people. The girls then painted
faces on the pumpkins. Special
guests w ere three senior
citizens: Minnie Stotts. Ida
Cramer and Margaret Young.

that the converters pose a
potential fire threat and avoid
driving through high grass and
brush.
Temperatures
inside the
converters are said to read
1,200
to
1,300
degrees
Fahrenheit, twice the tern
perature of regular exhaust
systems. Since converters are
slow to cool, such converters
can and have started grass and
brush fires — an unpleasant
interruption to a hunting trip at
