Sheriff gets money for staff
Money from the federal
Comprehensive Employment
and Training Act will allow the
Clackamas County Sheriffs
departm ent to hire 15 new
employes
Authority to hire the people
was given by the board of
commissioners Thursday. Aug
14, although some com
missioners criticized sheriffs
' officials for making statements
that budget problems would
re q u ire laying off some
department employes
“ This propaganda has got to
cease It's a disgrace," hoard
chairman Tom Telford said. He
said top officials of the sheriffs
department have been telling
residents that because of staff
cuts by the county com
missioners there would be
delays in responding to calls for
assistance.
The new positions, plus eight
jobs already funded by funds
from the employment and
training act. will mean that 23
members of the s h eriff's
department have all or part of
their salaries paid by federal

CHUCKLE OF THE week compliments of Johnny Red Jeep.
She was a typical snoop who had to know everything. So when
she saw this man at a bus stop holding a carton from which
something was leaking, she coyly suggested that it must be soda.
“ No," he told her, visibly annoyed
"Jelly of some kind." Now his annoyance was mounting. She
touched a finger to the box, licked it and triumphantly an
nounced: “ Pickles."
“ No," said the man, “ Puppies.”
Back next week. Ann
