POST Thurt., July 3. 1975 (Sec I) Bicentennial swim meet scheduled Sandy Explorers study police by Howard Scott Rost editor Members of the Sandy Police Scout Explorer Post will be assisting Sandy Police with traffic anti parking control during the Clackamas County Bicentennial Kickoff in Sandy next week The 13-member Explorer I Post was organized last year by . the police department in an ! effort. Chief Fred Punzel says. ! "to bring youth and the police department closer together We I want to fill in the gap that does exist between the police and the young people." Punzel says Subjects covered in the training included "all basic concepts of police work." the chief says. E x p lo re rs studied in vestigative techniques, finger printing, community relations, ja il and court procedures, rules of evidence and officer-violator contact. "Everyone passed the course and received college or high school credit for it." Punzel says. Traffic control procedures were taught by members of the Sandy police department. Post members are currently riding with Sandy officers as observers on regular patrols, but are instructed to remain in the patrol cars when the of ficers respond toanv calls " If a dangerous situation comes up. the officers are told to drop the kids off at the curb before responding." the chief adds "These are really an active minded bunch of youths,” Punzel says. "There was a little ribbing from the kids their age when the post was form ed, but they’ve handled it very well " During the Bicentennial the post mem bers, in th e ir uniforms of regulation police shirt and light blue slacks, will also march in the parade.
