Thur»., June 19, 1975 (Sec. 1) SANDY (O re.) POST
When plant» get »ick, there 1»
a cause for it ju»t like the
illnesses suffered by man One
of the firs t things man does is
make a trip to the aspirin bottle
or head for the doctor's office
By this action, he has gotten
into the habit of feeling cheated
if he doesn't need to make a trip
to the druggist for more aspirin
or have a prescription filled
before he is to begin feeling
better.
Some of us are undoubtedly
like plants in not being adapted
to the environment. We wander
around the planet thinking we

can take anything the day has
to offer while the plant avoids
certain areus because some
means of communication tells
the controlling factors that
the world around the corner
won't allow it to thrive There's
some room fo r speculation
about differences in individual
humans that causes trouble
when they attempt to live in
other parts of the world but
that's a subject for someone
else.
Man fa ils to respect the
requirements of many plants
and tries to cram them intoany
fashion to the original problem
it does little good to examine
the healthy par, of a plant when
other portions are in the
process of dying or showing the
disorder that has us concerned
A t some point on the twig or
branch ol any plant is the
healthy area and that area
already ravaged by the disease
or insect
The p oint where healthy
tissue is being destroyed
consists of a margin that must
be examined if any conclusion
is to be reached as to why the
plant has begun to deteriorate.
place where they would con
tribute something to his home.
As a result, a large percentage
of them suffer from environ
mental diseases and nothing
else No spray, fertilizer or
micro-nutrient treatment w ill
ever resto re the o rig in a l
condition when the cultural
requirements are lacking
Just as we bandage a cut
finger instead of a healthy toe
after an accident, the plant
suffers at one particular point
fir s , and la te r develops
secondary problems directly
related
in chain reaction
When this initial examination
fails to reveal why the leaves
are

brown,
examinations must move back
along the line water and plant
food nutrients must follow to
keep a ll tissue healthy.
Damaged or diseased portions
found be entirely reponsible for
the blockade of the supply lines
Damage could be mechanical
in nature and inflicted by in
tense sun, extrem e cold,
bruising by contact with other
limbs or hardware objects
Insects in flic t m echanical
damage by eating away
essential portions and disease

normal functions
Too many of the cases where
plants have been submitted for
examination are too late to
apply corrective action. Often,
the sample represents damage
done six to twelve months ago
by water, wind or the extremes
of ho, and cold. Corrective
action shortly after the damage
may have been the one thing
that would have saved the plant
bu, at a later date, the owner
must be given the news he does
